What does everyone here use for the quickest sore throat remedies? I've used lemon tea & honey, but I'm not sure it actually does much.
What do you use? Any secret Chinese remedies? Nectar of some flower only found inside of volcanos? Blood of an unblemished ram? |

Unless you're dealing with strain from too much talkin' a sore throat is more often the symptom of nasal issues. It's the drip that irritates the throat. Deal with the drip. Neti helps a lot. Gross...but it do's the job. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

This has been highly recommended to me by someone who makes their living talking for many hours a day on radio, but I have never tried it... It's on my list, though...
Has anyone here tried it?

this is a common remedy:
At the first sign of a cold, go to bed with a bottle of whiskey and a hat. Place the hat on the left-hand bedpost. Take a drink of whiskey and move the hat to the right-hand bedpost. Take another drink and shift the hat back again. Continue this until you drink the whiskey but fail to move the hat.
By then, the cold is probably cured ... or at least don't care anymore.
also - throat coat tea is da bomb! i was skeptical - but, yeah, it works. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Agreed with Drew about neti pots, which can be useful for a variety of otolaryngological issues. It saved me last spring from coughing a lung up from my first bout of post-nasal drip.
I also have used a gargle with a mixture of salt (main ingredient), turmeric (enough to make it all look yellow), and a bit of cayenne (maybe 1/8 or 1/4 tsp). Put about 1 teaspoon of the mixture in a small glass, add some lemon juice or apple cider vinegar (maybe 1 TB or so) and some pretty warm water (4-6 oz should be plenty). The salt and acidity will help chase away whatever nasties are causing irritation in the throat.
I have kept a little ziploc bag of the dry ingredients in the cupboard to just pull out whenever I need it. If you don't have all the ingredients, just use whatcha got and it'll still help. Even just salt and warm water will have a beneficial effect.
I do like Throat Coat tea too for soothing. Honey is very helpful in any sort of tea.
Feel better!

The Throat Coat Tea is good stuff too...I use that along with the Neti to sooth the irritation caused by the drip. Bottom line: If a cold is coming on, none of these will bring ya back 100%. But they help. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

Another vote for Throat Coat Tea & the Neti Pot
Another thing that works for me is the Pink Grapefruit Airborne fizzy tablets.
If I take one dissolved in water as soon as I feel "something" coming on it seems to nip it in the bud. _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

It really does depend on what is causing the soreness.
One thing many overlook is humidity. Now that most of us are using the heat, a dry, scratchy throat can easily be the result of not enough moisture in the air. In that case, tea with honey will work only until the honey is no longer coating your throat.
I would suggest - if you haven't already - checking the humidity level (an inexpensive hygrometer from your friendly local hardware store will do the trick). The recommended average humidity level is between 40 and 60 percent. Heating systems can easily drop that to the 30% area and even lower. To remedy that: a cool mist humidifier; preferably one that monitors the humidity level and automatically cycles to maintain a fairly constant comfort level.
In addition to the humidifier, make sure you're drinking enough water. Caffeinated beverages are not recommended because caffeine dehydrates (soda does not quench thirst because of the caffeine; it only makes us drink more soda).
If increasing the humidity and drinking more water don't help, then try the other suggestions. _________________ Mike
