I don't know why the two of you are wasting your time in voice acting. You could be billionaires in the motivational video market.

Dear Mr. International Voiceoverist Mr. Philip Banks,

I am writing to ask your advice. Today I booked my first voice job. I will be playing the part of a constricted blood vessel, saying "You're choking me with all those polyglicrides."

I actually have 2 questions. The first is, I wore my lucky t-shirt when I auditioned. It's the same t-shirt I wore in 1986, when I was playing softball on the Brickles Rib Shack softball team and I hit safely in 18 consecutive games. Unfortunately the Rib Shack burned down right after that 18th game and that ended my hitting streak. I took the shirt and stuffed it in a plastic bag and didn't take it out until last Friday when I did the audition.

My concundrum is that I will be going in person to a studio to record this job Of course, I planned on wearing my lucky t-shirt, and a few friends have suggested I wash the t-shirt before I wear it again.

I am afraid that washing it after all these years will wash out all of the luck from the shirt. What do you thin Mr. International Voiceoverist Philip Banks?

My second question has to deal with today's tip. Are there any microphones that you are familiar with that I can actually put in my mouth? I am thinking if I can get the mic right on top of my epiglotis, I can come up with that oh so popular "imaging" sound. I am also not adverse to having surgery to implant a microphone if necessary. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks, and let me say that I have been enjoying listening to you since I was a little boy and next to Gabbie Hayes, I consider you my inspiration.

Sincerely,
j.s. gilbert

I feel I must quote a line from the musical "South Pacific" during which the put upon and ill-used Nellie Forbush sings "I'm gonna wash that man right outta my hair". This symbolism as she ablutes is adopted because she wishes to rid herself of the memory of a recent assignation. By contrast you are required to "keep dat man right in your hair" by leaving it unwashed. Apply this to your T-shirt and you will see the action you should take.

Orally internal microphones are a matter of taste (moment of humour there) and I shall go with the staple diet of all imaging voices, namely the Sennheiser MKH416. If you have the Gag Reflex preset on your compressor/pre you'll sound exactly like someone swallowing a crap mic which is what the market demands.

The best bit with this one was that bright bit at the very end.

So is the "sweet spot" a state of mind or a state of location?

As long as you enter at the 8th and 33rd entrance - or you are lost in the underground for days before finding yourself in the Penn State Station State of Mind.
