I thought you guys might find this interesting. It's a pie chart showing how long FaffCon 2 registrants-to-date have been in the VO biz:

(From today's blog post: A rising tide lifts all boats.) Cool, isn't it?

Amy... Why do you use the description of the pie as "# of years in the biz"
and in the FaffConBlog you say it "illustrates level of expertise"?

You don't think that there's correlation between length of time in the biz and amount of expertise? Perhaps I should have used the term "experience" instead?

Joe Vocals has been making two 30 second commercials each month for 20 years, and still has his day job at the local Piggly Wiggly.
Sam Speaks has been doing the full gamut of VO work... commercials, audio books, narrations,,, for 6 years, and it's his only source of income.
Who would you say has the greater expertise?

Ok... my expertise probably doesn't even nudge the scale, so don't assume I'm speaking with any great accumulation of knowledge.

I think length of time is just one factor.

Two other factors could be:
Diversity of VO work... commercials, audio books, narrations, phone prompts, etc.
Working VO for total income... perhaps an 8 year VO veteran's total income comes from VO, and a 15 year veteran has a day job for a safety net.

This is just my opinion and I wouldn't want anyone to feel like I'm charting everyone's website. I value all lessons I've learned here regardless of time in grade.

Both will show that there are lies, damn lies, statistics and worst of all SPIN.

At VOICE2010 they had a Promo panel which consisted of the LA great and the good, anyone who listened to the contributors will have walked away with some knowledge if they took the trouble to listen.

Being one who likes to apply opposite spin I made a comment that I was not invited to be a contributor to the Promo Panel because they were only using local voices. Technically true but clearly complete and utter bollocks! Needless to say most people saw the joke and entered into the spirit of it.

Faffcon - Go because you would really like to go. In so doing you will derive benefit from it. Have one hand open to give and another open ready to receive.

The real and only point of the chart is to point out, in a nice way, that FaffCon's demographics are different from other voice over conferences of which one may have heard. Smile
