Just watched an interview with the great Orson Welles in which he tried to educate his interviewer on why a baritone voice isn't necessarily better than any other voice. Cue awkwardness. Skip ahead to 6:45 for that or watch the whole thing for some more good insight on acting.

Little know fact: Orson Welles' career was launched when he was discovered standing on a street corner in Columbus, OH holding a sign that said, "Will Pontificate for Food." Wink

Orson was a wonderful and insightful man who loved to tell stories. While I was a film student, I was also working a KNXT as an intern, and a bunch of us along with Roy Firestone went to lunch at Pink's Hotdogs- of course almost everyone went to Pink's in those days, but it was not the zoo that it is today. Pink's is also not know for its parking. So, while we were standing in the dog line, up pulls a black Cadillac and stops at, what still is, a defunct driveway. The the back door opens, and out steps Orson Wells.-- Wholly Crap!

Roy, the crew and I look at each other, as Orson chugs up to the line in is flat footed way, and as he gets closer we motioned him to the head of the line, where he ordered 12 hotdogs, each with a little mustard and onion.

Some months later I happened to be at Pink's, and who should be there again? Of course, Orson. I had been having a problem with a particular test shot for a student film that was in black and white. I knew that Orson was the master of B&W, so I though "what the hell?" So I asked him about it.

Well, it was the perfect thing to do, because come to find out, no one ever talked to him about cinematography except Gregg Tollend--- we talked for close to an hour.

Orson was the most available and approachable man in Hollywood, unless he was working on a project. I had the pleasure of many conversations with him over the next two years until he passed, and I cherish every one. I was one lucky kid.

Mike's story (awesome story!) got me to finally go watch the clip.

What an interesting man. You can see how thoughtful he was.

In fact, I think I might have developed a crush 50 years late! LOL!! Inoccent

Ahem, anyway... I always feel like I learn so much by watching and listening to people like him speak. It would be really interesting to see more interviews with him. I can't take the time to go down that Youtube black hole right now, but it's going on the list...

Holy crow Mike, you're a lucky guy. As I posted on Bob's Facebook today, I could listen to Orson all day long and feel like I'll be the smartest man in the world by 6 pm. What an amazing storyteller and analytic.

I think those who have only heard the "Peas" VO outtakes might be surprised to learn just how accommodating and pleasant he could be.

You know, even though I'm really only about 30, I grew up watching Orson Welles (it's higher math, don't ask). I learned something from him each time -- and we both go around the house from time to time echoing some catch phrase of his.... watching these vids of him bring back some good memories. Wink
