VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

So I don't know if this is the right place to put this but since it's my gear that's making the offensive noise, here's where I'll try first.

I'm on a MBP running PT 7.4.2. I have a Neumann U87 running into a dbx286A to the mBox. I've been noticing that on my sibilant sounds, mostly f's and s's, I've been getting a zapping sound that proceeds the consonant. Thinking it could be a processing problem with the MBP running PT and recording to it, I purchased an external hard drive to record to. (now I'm getting the error message on replay that the DAE can't get audio from the drive fast enough. But that's a problem for another post. Oy!) No dice. The zapping sound persists. I can sometimes edit it out but it's driving me crazy! Any thoughts from our wunderkinds?

This is a generic troubleshoot start.
Unplug and replug all your connections from mic through chain to computer, reboot and try again.

Post a sample of the sound.

Also try this: get close to the mic and breath on it like you're Fogging a mirror. If the mic makes that sound, you have a dirty capsule, and it needs to be cleaned. DO NOT TRY TO CLEAN IT YOUR SELF!

I've recorded from an Mbox mini, PT LE 7.4, DBX 286a..to a Mac Mini for at least two years now with never an overload message ever...recording to the system drive of the Mac mini...I keep my buffer setting in the software fairly high (1024)..

Replug, reboot....give it a try..

I find that those Mbox Mini's are not the heartiest of hardware...I've already had one go out... Line input 1 on the Mbox just wet the bed one day.. and recording via USB 1.1 always makes me a little nervous

Ok, did not put it in the dishwasher or send it to the dry cleaners but I did fog it up as you suggested and it did not get all zappy.

So how do I post an audio file on here? Am just now getting proficient enough to quote a post but I think putting an audio file on the board may be beyond my ken.

Ok now that we know the mic is good, it may be just a matter of increasing the DAW's buffer size. The fact that you're also getting the DAE warning, could be just another part of the problem.

I take it your hard drive is Firewire also??
Try setting up you digital chain like this: Macbook > drive > interface (this should solve the error message, and possibly the noise issue)

There have been a lot of problems with that error code
1. Go through ProTools Help us Help You documentation thoroughly.
2. Use a FW drive that has the Oxford chipset. Check with the drive manufacturer to verify that their drive has the "Oxford 911", "Oxford 912", "Oxford 924" or comparable chipset & drive speed of 7200 rpm. This is a requirement of Protools. (Oxford chips are not only preferred by Digi, but they are specifically designed for A/V usage. You're playing with fire if you go with anything else.)
3. Make sure you have the latest version of your plug-ins and virtual instruments.
4. Don't use a FW Hub.

It can also be an OS problem- one of two solutions could help:
Revert from 8.0.3 to 8.0.1 CS2 on Leopard 10.5.8
~And ultimately~
Clean install (format the entire hard drive) of Snow Leopard 10.5.3 and install 8.0.3

The way I understand it, she just got a new external hard drive, so it should be good to go, unless she wanted to reformat and partition it. But being a new HD, and knowing everyone wants to save a buck these day, my suspicions are in the HD's chipset.

But alas we have not heard back from our troubled young damsel.
