Well, it looks like I need to finally get a Big Girl Phone Patch so I can do playback and everything. Can't limp along with my pretend one any longer.
It would need to be Skype friendly.
I know there were recommendations around here for this very thing, but my search has been futile. (Which may at least partially be due to the fact that I have a splitting headache.)
Can someobody help a sister out? _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

That cell phone one looks great, Bruce! Would I be able to use that with just my M and laptop when traveling, do you think? Or does it have to go into my mixer? (I couldn't figure that out...)
ETA: It's XLR in and out, so it looks like I can stick it in-between the mic and the Mic Port Pro. Sticking something like this in the road kit would be awesome! _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

I've been wearing a phone headset under my studio headphones, positioning its microphone between my mouth and the mic. _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

Since you are already familiar with Skype. Have you tried re-routing the inputs and outputs for Skype?
Usually you can tell Skype (in Preferences) to use your Mic as it's Mic and your hedphones as its output source. You would have to experiment with your audio interface and software, to make sure it works correctly and doesn't bleed into the recording.
You might try it. _________________ I'm still...

You could just route the outputs/inputs of the Skype computer with 3.5mm m/m cables to your recording computer and monitor it there. Much depends on your gear but I have a similar setup using the secondary outputs on my PC. I only use one PC but it would work identically with two; I'd simply have to swap computers to answer the Skype calls. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

Corey, you're suggestion sounds like it's probably awesome, but I don't think it'd work for me. For one thing, I don't want to run anything else on there while I'm recording--and I did a Skype test on it and there were occasional artifacts in the recording at unpredicatable intervals. For another, I can't monitor anything except audio on that little screen...
Here's what I'm planning:
--Add another monitor to my main desktop machine/edit bay
--Mount it at eye level near my mic
--Mount my webcam and point it near my face
--Stock a keyboard someplace over there, too
--Find an extension cable for my Skype headset
--Figure out how to do playback
Also:
--I bought that cell phone patch for my mobile rig, for a back-up, and for folks who don't have Skype or ISDN.

I've got a Daptor 2 for $120 shipped, if you want it.
Will throw in adaptor to work with iPhone/Android/Blackberry phones.

Kasey-- I'm lost. Will one of those things help with playback via Skype? That's the part of the puzzle I still haven't fixed... _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

I think in your situation, if you are going to use a mixer, an audio connection to and from the skype computer would allow you to have the connection all thru your equipment, sort of like a radio station. You would need in and out cables to and from the mixer and Skype PC (and therefore no real need for the aforementioned devices) That is fairly easy to talk someone thru over the phone.
I would be more than happy to talk on the phone so I can asses what you have and what you would need exactly. I think I can see in my head what you have for a set up and I think simple audio cables can make your situation work if they are routed properly. _________________ Does life start at 40? |

Kasey is right on the money. While you can share the Skype duties with your recording interface (unless you are using Pro Tools), if you want to have it on a separate computer, it's pretty easy to integrate with the RIGHT CABLES. Depending on your DAW and audio interface, you may not need a mixer, either. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
