|
|
ok - another dyi project this week. i got a jib boom for video projects and i am building a mount for it. i want the mount to:
1) roll (when it needs to)
2) NOT roll (when it needs to)
3) be relatively light weight
4) be stable
5) pan
ii have some ideas - but they might not be the BEST ideas. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

You have looked at high quality jib booms up close to see how they're made, right? That's one tough DIY assignment. They're pretty slick.
Might be some for sale fairly cheap during these times.

i already have the jib boom - and, yes, it was downright reasonable. now i need something to mount it to. tried a heavy-duty camera tripod but was not happy with the stability. tried a speaker stand, and while stable - it was really too tall with too large of a footprint.
you know those tripod mounts they used to use to mount a TV antenna to the roof? i'm thinking about one of those with locking casters. how to mount & pan? still working on it. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

mike thanks for that link! the stands in the pics are way too light - but THIS:
is EXACTLY what i'm looking for!
$4k is a bit out of the budget - but this gives me something to work with when i head for the home depot. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

after a trip to the local home improvement store - i came up with this:
rooftop TV antenna mount rated at 250#
1 1/4" galvanized pipe and floor flange from the plumbing dept.
a little 1/8" plate steel for the top
casters
panning occurs simply allowing the flange to spin on the threaded pipe - a little graphite made it super-smooth.
the weak point is how the casters attach to the legs. i'm going to replace the mounts with 2" angle iron i think i'll also get heavier casters. the jib i have is pretty light - maybe 75# - and i'm only putting a canon 60d out there - so weight shouldn't be a big problem. i probably WILL add an extra cross beam at the bottom of the legs, just in case.
cost: a little under $70 _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

beefed up the suspension with 2" angle iron and added a larger 4-bolt caster. solid as a rock now!
i know this isn't very interesting - and BARELY "gear" but i've got a shoot next week that is going to be MADE by this little hunk of metal.
thanks for your indulgence. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis
