I have an opportunity to score a practically new in the box AT 4040 for a very good price (less than $200). Lower baritone voice, all purpose, general usage mic is what I'm after.
I've heard samples online, and the mic doesn't blow me away, it doesn't really bother me either. I've read people raving about it. Am I missing something? are there better alternatives out there in the $150 - $300 range for my purposes? |

AT mics sound a little fizzy to me. In your price range check out
KEL Audio mics. There are samples on their site as well as at Zen Pro Audio.
I own the HM2d which sounds like a Shure SM7B but is a condensor mic.
The build quality is very good on the KEL mics. They have a lot of flavors. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

There are several places that you can get an MXL Mogami V69 microphone for $220 - $240, which includes high end cable, shockmount.
And for a$30 - $50 more, you can get a replacement NOS tube, Telefunken or Seimens or many others. This can be a future purchase, which will get that mic to hold it's own against $1,000+ mics.
Shootouts have actually proven it to be true (at least as far as vocal mics were concerned)

i have a MXL Mogami V69 with a mullard tube and use it all the time - i think it sounds as good as almost any mic in the $1,500-$2,000 range. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I have one laying around here, it doesn't get much use and it doesn't blow anyone away, but it's a decent mic if you can get it under 200 and you are looking for just a backup or alt mic |

I actually ended up picking one up for less than $200, and I've not used but for a couple of projects...It did fine on some technical narration....I cannot get any of the settings on the DBX286a to add anything at all.....I looks like it'll end up sitting here or maybe put up on Ebay if I can find something better. |
