The KU4 is AEA’s modern interpretation of the original RCA KU3A, which many engineers consider to be the best ribbon microphone ever made. The increased rear rejection of the supercardioid pattern reduces the amount of room sound, which is often desired in modern production applications, particularly vocal recording. With a custom transformer, strong neodymium magnets and a low-tuned RCA new-old stock ribbon, the KU4 continues AEA’s legacy for wide-bandwidth, top-quality ribbon microphones handmade in beautiful Pasadena, CA.

I've had enough of lousy character rendition and finger-wagging retakes due to the most minuscule mouth, clothing, stomach and paper noises picked up five chairs away in an animation session, especially with those annoying TLM mics. This design simply extracts pure whole characterization every time, as long as you've got a good quiet preamp. Don't even need a smelly, intrusive "popperstopper" plus rotting foam muffler encasement, when you use the thoroughly thought-through, dialog dedicated 10001 interfaced with human performers - you have to consciously blast air at it to create "pops". And you can even cover 2 or 3 actors beautifully, with a single angled/overhead mounted U3A (now U4, from AEA).

Mike,
That looks like a mighty sweet microphone, indeed. Thank you. _________________ Be well,

SOT alert: What's with CB's closed to new users message board?
That mic is a new one to me. You mean it sounds better than the Coles lip mic? These suckers need a crap load of gain. I dare tried the Coles with a M , and it was useless. 60+db of gain is a requirement. In the right hands and connected to the right pre, it could be amazing... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

When you go onto CB's site their is a link above the message board link titled "Banned From The Messaged Board For No Reason" Click on it and it will guide you through the process.
Yes, Much better than the Coles. The Cole is much better suited for news and commentators. The BBC had their own version of the RCA 77 and 44, for their character work and drama.
Here is CB on his KU A3 with little more than 2.5kHz midrange boost, 100Hz rolloff on the low end and 2:1 compression with mid-level threshold trigger point, through a Vintech 1272 preamp. The High end was cut also to sound like an old optical print audio. (This was all done to sound like a 1950's announcer)
