Hey all,

I've purchased a CDQ Prima 110 codec from E-Bay and have found that the fan on the side is really noisy. Is this normal? I've just spent a huge sum of money having a brand new soundproof voiceover booth built from scratch and am really upset that my new (£900) purchase won't be usable as the fan is so loud. It must be on a desk within reach in order to use, so it will be within striking distance of my mic.

Any thoughts/suggestions? Thanks in advance,

Darren,

That has to be really frustrating. Why does it have to be within reach to use? Does it not auto-answer? Or could you have it outside the booth, leave the door open while you're connecting (so they can hear you through your microphone) and then once things are settled and locked-in, you go into the booth and close the door leaving the unit and it's noise outside your booth?

Hey Bob,

The booth isn't finished and nothing is set up yet, but I just plugged it in to see if it was working and what a noise! To be honest, I just presumed that it would sit on my desk, within reach and didn't envisage having to leave the booth, push buttons, connect and then walk back in to do the session. In answer to your question, I don't know if it has an auto-answer, sorry.

Are all codec fans this noisy? Is it normal to have it outside the booth?

is it possible the fan blades are rubbing against a wire or something? maybe something came "un-clipped" in shipping ... pretty common. i'd check that 1st. if it's just a loud, worn-out fan you can replace it pretty cheaply with a low-noise fan.

That's probably why it was on eBay.

Getting a quiet fan installed should not be that big of a deal.

Most VOs tend to keep the codec OUT of the booth as booths should be rigged for silent running.

Darren, don't have an answer about your particular fan noise, but I have my Telos outside the booth.

I turn the Telos on, & when people dial me in I hear the lovely "chirp-chirp", I get in my booth & say "hello!"...I guess that's what Bob means by "Auto-answer"

Thanks all, I guess that explains it all, outside is the way to go! Since my post I found this on EBay. Gonna keep my eye on it as I might sell the 110 and grab the LT. I messaged the buyer who told me that the LT does not have a fan and is silent. It's also the better model. I'll let you know...

I got my Zephyr around 1995. A few years later I sent it to Cleveland for service and it came back with a very annoying fan noise. I called the Telos folks and they instructed me to open the top, find the fan's power wire, and cut it. I haven't had the problem since.

I turn the unit off when it's not being used.

If you select the Common menu <COM> on the menu column, and scroll through the options, you may (depending which software version you have) find one named CFN. This allows you to turn the fan off and on. It'll be fine without the fan for a few minutes. Having the unit outside the booth would be my favourite though!

Now that's tech service!

Charles, thank you. I have a feeling that the software in this unit is fairly old (2001) but I'll have a look.. Ta

If you watch the display when you boot it up, it'll tell you the software version.

I had looked into th Zephyr fan issue myself and did speak to a tech at Telos. I was told NOT to disable the fan as it would cause overheating and damage to the unit. Mine's a 9202.

The fan noise from the studio PC and the Zephyr were contributing reasons to my adding a booth to the studio here.
