Pretty much a no-brainer for me. I want to add some character to my 416. I hear it sounds pretty good on a TLM-103, too.

Sold.

I don't have a GAP but a John Hardy which is similar I am told...(the Neve-ish sound tho I believe the GAP has a little more color than the Hardy)

Excellent for a 416, I also have a Neumann that sounds great through it.

Can't go wrong with the GAP

Brad, please do post feedback results! I'm looking to pair something else with my 416 too and have considered the GAP. Did you get any of the mods, or just stock?

I'll just mention this about the Mods.

It's not that bog of a deal. The GAP sounds just fine As Is,

Save your money and just get the stock pre. You will be more than happy with it. I've heard the difference does not justify the cost, especially for what we do. We just don't dive it that hard like we would if we were using it for a guitar.

If you want a real 1073 clone you can build one for $500 (just for parts).

While I wouldn't get the "full" mod on the GAP, I would think about footin' the extra $99 for the "TT" mod.....only because I've heard all three in sound examples, and the TT mod removes just enough high end to probably really help the 416's accentuated highs. But yes, you're right Mike, what I've heard of the GAP without any modifications sounds mighty fine too.

If you don't like the brightness of the 416, don't use it. With that said the smoothing action of the high end with the stock GAP is more than enough.

But it's your money.

YOu can save yourself $ and just get the Carnhill drop-in, this way you can do a side by side.
