Weird news travels fast. You and Kara posted the same story within a minute of each other.

Well this is one way to kill the golden goose!

I don't remember the show, but it featured a monologue Gottfried did just days after 9/11. It was crude, as he usually is, but it was supportive, and many people praised him at the time for helping to lift those who saw it out of our terrible mood. Maybe he thought he was doing it again. Boy did he miss the mark. Those who live by the raunchy quip can quickly die by it too.
