dh got a new macbook pro.
we're secured wireless in the house with 3 other computers--1 mac, 1 pc, 1 laptop.
we can't find the password for the router, nor the place on the macbook where one is prompted to enter the password.
so ... we're stuck.
we could reset the password and reconnect the modem/router {{{shudder}}}
but we'd rather figure out what is the password and then where to input it on that macbook pro.
but where to start.
any ideas welcomed. flaming strongly discouraged _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Many router default passwords (unless they have been changed) are either "admin", "admin1" or just "password". Don't know where on the mac you would enter it though. You might be able to access the router setup by typing 192.168.1.1 into the address bar in your web browser though I am not sure if any of this will be helpful for you. Good luck! _________________ Tony Impieri

I think you're looking at a reset, unless you can access the 192.168.1.1 location online.
And this time write stuff down. _________________ "Bailey"

Fire up a web browser and try to access http://192.168.1.1 - if you get a prompt enter the username "Admin" and the password you believe it would be.
Once in you can access the WEP/WPA tools and copy/paste the key to a file and move that to the Mac.
If that doesn't work, take the laptop and disable the wifi (do macs have a switch for that? check the docs) and plug it straight into the router with a cable and repeat above steps. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

You can disable the WiFi by just turning the Airport off. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

MacBook Pro:
Normally, when the Airport finds a wireless network with security it automatically asks you for the password when you try to join. But if not...
Open "System Preferences"
Open "Network"
Select "Airport" in the left column
If the Lock icon in the lower left corner of the window is "locked" you will need to click on it and enter an administrator password to make changes. Most Mac users operate as an administrator, so your user password should work.
If the lock icon is now "unlocked"
Click on "Advanced" in the bottom right of the Network window.
Now you should see a list of "Preferred Networks"
Highlight your home network and click the little "pencil" (edit) icon right below that window, next to the "+" and "-" symbols
A window should pop up that has the network name the type of security and a place to enter a password.
Enter the password.
Save and close everything. _________________ I'm still...

thanks for all your suggestions. we did figure it out but not it was not devoid of teeth-gnashing, pulling-out-of-hair, and threats to pay someone hundreds of dollars just to do it for us. actually, i stayed out of the way. for once, a smart move! _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be.
