VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

Hi.

I have a C01U USB condenser microphone connected to my MacBookPro running OS X 10.5.8. When I plug the mic into my computer, one OR both of the following two issues usually occurs:

1. The sound is slightly muffled and "crackly".
2. In the "sound" control panel, I'll set the C01U's "input volume" to max (100%) and will SOMETIMES hear the audio level at full-volume and SOMETIMES the audio will sound half as loud (as if I only set the volume to 50%).

These issues occur before I have even opened up my audio program (Audacity). What's so frustrating is that I can't duplicate a consistent solution for these two issues. The closest I can get is to unplug and replug in the mic and/or exit and restart the audio program.

Note that I *did* have the SoftPre drivers installed but recently ran the uninstall software and rebooted my computer.

Could I possibly still have legacy drivers in my computer? Any other solutions so that I can get the mic to work the first time it's plugged in?

If you're getting muffled, crackly sound I'd venture there's two likely causes:

1) Damage to the mic itself. Check it with another computer known to work and verify you get clean sound from it.
2) Speed or buffer issues moving the audio data from the mic to your system; in which case you can increase buffer size in Audacity at the cost of latency.

@ cyclometh: Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try my mic on my wife's PC.... and I quadrupled the buffer size in audacity from 100ms to 400ms. It's weird, though, how the issue always somehow resolves itself without doing anything more than plugging/unplugging and exiting/restarting. Hmmm.
