i don't know where i picked it up or how (and i'm sure that most have felt this) but the marshmallow-in-mouth feeling has returned and it's muddling up my recordings.
how have people worked this out in their experiences??

Hey Sarah
Before you record use a wine cork to warm up. Hold the cork with your teeth and read your script slowly enunciating every letter and vowel. Do this for about 3 minutes or more. It doesn't matter how you sound with inflection or any of that. It loosens up your jaws and mouth.
You'll be amazed how much better you sound after.

That truly is a good exercise (remember, however, not to drink the wine before trying it.)
Also, I find that reciting Gilbert and Sullivan patter song lyrics is a great mind/tongue sharpener. _________________ Diane

I use a pen in my mouth, sideways, like a horse's bit.
Right behind my eye teeth.
I have a pen in my booth expressly for that.
I like it better than the cork, but that's what makes a ball game! _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Sarah,
If the above is still not working you may want to try this...
Read the copy slowly. Word by word. Read through the script or a graph three times increasing the pace each time. This will allow your eyes to see each word, brain to process each word, and your mouth will follow suit as you ramp up the speed.
Sometimes it is the brain to mouth chain that causes the marshmallow feel. |

When life hands you marshmallows, make fluffernutters.
Sorry. That wasn't much help. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Singers and actors I used to know would stretch their facial and vocal muscles before working by saying/singing their lines by saying every word/syllable in an enunciated but exaggerated manner to warm it all up and get everything moving before they went on. _________________ Any project, any size, I can help.

I've heard about this cork warmup strategy for a while now and use it to warm up as well. But sadly, I don't know if I'm doing it right. Do you put the cork in between the front teeth sideways? Can anyone post a pic just to give me an example (I promise not to post it on my cork fetish album) |

Thanks Jeff! I was definitely doing it wrong. LOL it felt like I was doing it right. Maybe it was all mental like a placebo. Have you ever heard of some Japanese tool for voice actors/singers called "Voice Make"? This guy I've been talking about wrote this about it:
"Voice Make will train your lips, cheek muscle, tongue and throat to make your voice/pronunciation as clear as possible.
By reading or singing while chewing this with your back teeth, vertically or horizontally, closing or opening your lips, your throat will open up and the elements in/around your mouth will move much smoother.
By using Voice Make, your face will look more fit/lifted which is a great side-effect for women. Try chewing something 0.5cm-1cm thick item with your back teeth and simulate how it works!
(width should be the length between right back teeth to left back teeth)
If you can find a substitutable item, you may not need to purchase Voice Make after all!" |

Yes. Mush mouth, lazy lips Sometimes we all need articulation exercises. I keep my cork in my booth. I gave up wine for lent...so I just take a whiff once in a while. lol _________________ Bobbin Beam
