Going thru security at the United terminal at LAX last night— my Sennheiser 416 got flagged even though I carry it in its own case with the documentation with it. The dope screening my stuff asked me "is this yours?" and when I said yes, she grabbed the mic out of the case and started waving it around like it was an empty tube. I blurted out "Don't do that!!" and so we had to go to a separate place to test it for whatever the fark they test stuff for.
I really did panic.
She had no idea she was waving around an $800 "tube". _________________ DBCooperVO.com

The sad thing is that even if you had placed a gaudy "Fragile" label on the case, and yet another one inside attached to the 416 itself, the outcome would have been the same (y'know... a two syllable word with seven letters).
Cue horrific TSA stories.... _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I travel a ton and usually with a 416. I've had the best luck traveling with it in its plastic case (with the logo on the top). I put it through in the last of my bins, with my phone, watch, etc., so that I'm usually on the far side of the scanners when it goes through. As soon as they grab the case out of the bin for an extra look-see, I volunteer, "It's a microphone!" They'll usually ask if they can open it. I say yes but please do it LOGO SIDE UP so it doesn't drop out onto the floor. And then I watch carefully to make sure they don't do anything dumb with it (like wave it around like Harry Potter). Once they open it and see it sitting there with the foam poof and stand connector they're usually fine. Once or twice they've wanted to swab it for explosives.
I think you just had the bad luck to get a rookie. Usually at LAX and Burbank, they're not fazed by microphones (I think they see them fairly often.) _________________ Bob Ransom

I went sailing through the Phoenix airport with my mic and other recording paraphernalia only to have them stop me just as I was almost through for 2oz of sunscreen in a 4oz tube. They sent me back to the drugstore to buy a 3oz. bottle to tranfer it to. They could've cared less about the mic, mic-port pro, or the tube from the mic stand - all 3 of which usually get some scrutiny. |

You're lucky. When I got to Faffcon and opened up my suitcase I discovered a leaking shampoo bottle in the bottom of the bag. Apparently the TSA inspectors who scrutinized my liquids and gels had just tossed them back. I guess they were just too busy and/or important to bother returning them to the plastic bag they had removed them from. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I once carried a 3-hole punch in my suitcase, one of the big, heavy office versions. Unfortunately, it hadn't been emptied in who knows how long. The inspecting TSA agent had apparently never seen a 3-hole punch before and, being ever so vigilant, opened it.
I'm still picking the occasional little round hole of paper out of my suitcase. Thankfully, I've managed to clear out the other 399,999 holes that they dumped all over everything. _________________ Bob Ransom

I have my VO business card taped to my mic case and only once have I had someone stop me. They took the case over and put it into another machine to scan it further. They never opened it.
I yelled out...."come on lady, give me back my short range shotgun so I can get on this plane!" _________________ Ben
