Could be interesting. The tube side is a little more modern sounding and agile than the original 610. The tube side can add a little hair to the sound not wooly like the 610. You'll probably find yourself running at and around 50% on the dive, unless you looking for a warmer bass sound. _________________ The Blog:

I just tried one out today at the store- it's been on my wishlist. Also listened to the ISA One and the Avalon M5.
The Low Cut on the Twin-finity was pretty severe.
I didn't notice as much of a difference as I expected dialing between the Transparent and the Tube setting.
OTOH I was listening through a patched mixer, and while I didn't see one, it sounded to me as though there was a bit of compression which might have clouded my perceptions. |

The M5 is a good pre, but it has a tendency of bringing a lot of the room to the mix. So it would be advised to have a very well treated recording space.

You are correct. It will warm up the sound a little bit, and add a bit of Hair to the the signal-- meaning, it will get a little fuzzy. But much of that will depend on the tube used.
It's a nice idea, but it would have been a better idea had they used the 610 in the tube section.
With all that said, I keep going Back to the GAP 73. _________________ The Blog:

Are all the GAP73 mods worth it from Zen Pro, Mike?
I just installed a Grace M103 for a client in place of his flaky 737, and that thing is sweet. Very quiet, clean, nice compressor, lots of outputs (no need for a splitter anymore), even has a preamp dedicated output before the rest of the channel strip if you want to track dry and wet. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

The mods are a different sound, not sure if it's worth the $300.
There has been some talk that GAP is going to do the REV 2 of the GAP with all the component upgrades in it.

Yes a very nice transparent pre. The optical compressor is wort the pice of the unit alone- especially for VO. I use an LA2A and it make all the difference in the world.
I wish more preamp designers would make their channel strips as versatile as this unit. _________________ The Blog:

Wish I'd read that a few days ago. Although some other places seem to have the basic version in-stock, thinking that the mods (at least the TT mods) might be a big deal, I called Zen Audio, but they are out of the GAP 73's till May.
So I put that off and ordered the RNP instead for now.
I've tried a TT modified GAP 73 (not the vanilla one) very briefly and liked it. Neither the GAP 73, nor the RNP are available here, so haven't had any real chance to compare. But my assumption was, the RNP would be more transparent, and therefore the sound I produce would maintain more consistency when I am able to upgrade to a higher end preamp later on. Still thinking I would like to pick up a GAP 73 next chance I get, unless I suddenly score a huge-paying gig or two and go for something really high-end.

previously had my eyes/ears on both the Twin-finity and the Avalon M5, but after reading that, may have to keep looking... |

The RNP is a "Really Nice Pre".. It's pleasantly colored. I like it but not as much as the GAP. I don't think I've used the RNP for about 2 years now.
Regarding the M5 - If I was a promo guy and had a 416, I would probably use the M5. But the Grace M103 would be a better choice- it would of course depend upon the voice.
Too many preamps, so little time. _________________ The Blog:

I've been using a 737 w/ my 416 for about 4 years now. 'Been looking to dump it for a solid pre, so I'll check out the Grace m103. Thanks for bringing it up, George. |

The 710 arrived today from Sweetwater,.. still fiddling with levels but the main difference I've noticed is a much more "refined" sound than the 286 I was using..I'm running running the tube blend at halfway, there's a subtle difference, but then again I'm still playing with input levels etc.. |

I know, weird/random first post .
That's good to know that the GAP73 is good for voice over. It's insanely popular for all kinds of audio work in the music industry. I'm pretty sure that will be my next preamp. Hopefully the GAP73 "v2" is just as good or better. |
