|
|
I have a Power Mac G5 (pre-Intel) which came with 512K of memory (ha! those were the days) and three or four years ago I added two 1GB DDR RAM memory cards to it. Lately my audio program is warning me that there's not enough memory and checking the System Profiler it doesn't "see" the additional memory anymore. I opened up the box and re-installed the chips and still no-see-um. The originals, thank goodness, are still working.
Do these things just die?

Yup. They are basically switches, on off on off.. and can fail.
It's not an every day event, the hard drive usually gives up first. I use RAM from Crucial.com and it has outlasted the machines. We bought generic RAM in the past for a render farm, and would have bad sticks all the time. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

Bruce... Were those two 1GB DDR RAM memory cards matched to the speed of your G5?
It appears to be a standing issue with the G5 computers. _________________ "Bailey"

Yep. I quadruple checked that when I installed them and got 3 or four years of service from them.
Lo and behold, I did some checking and there's a company that specializes in Mac Memory chips about a mile or so from the house here. I'll see them Monday.

Yes, but in theory they just control time and date (and therefore start-up in some cases) and mine appears to be AOK.

If it's over 3 years old, change the battery.
Make sure that if you need new RAM that it's all the same-- brand and everything. Mixing and matching RAM sticks can bring up KERNAL Panics on MAC. I always go to a good reliable Mac professional or Apple Store to get my sticks. Memory is cheap enough already, so some be supper cheap. _________________ The Blog:
