REPLY - so easy money for a pro? Oh wait, no it isn't! It's hardly enough for an amateur. No, don't double your budget simply move the decimal point to the right.

What are you all wearing "Kick Me" signs to the sessions?

As for those marked up scripts, turn off "track changes" in MS Word.

I had some idiot do that to me when I was doing cable TV ads.

I have to agree with J.S. on this one.

Don't get me wrong, I do have tough sessions and all but I don't let anything bother me when I am making money. I even had a client leave his talk back on in a rough session and as I was reading through heard him say to the lady next to him... "Nope, not there yet, it is close, but I am not hearing what I have in my head." I just kept reading and then waited for more line reads.

I always try to remember that I am just the paint.

They are the artists,
There is a vision,
I need a paycheck.
(that is almost a haiku!)

D.B. I would have loved to see that guys face after you told them to do it!

"Well it fitted when I read it in the office!"

"What did you use to time it? A sundial?"

Thanks for the tip. That's one less thing for me to whine about. I'll find something else.

I once had a job where I was instructed to visit a website for the copy. Turns out it was a slide show, and to get the script, I would've had to go to 200+ web pages and print each one. Uh-uh. When I said there would be an administrative fee for printing 200+ pages one at a time, the script amazingly turned up in Word format.

Another story is when a financial services company wanted me to re-do their demo narration that had just been done by someone else. They called me because they didn't like the way the first guy pronounced 'associates' (he gave the 'cia' the 'sh' sound). I wondered - but didn't ask - why a financial services company would pay twice for the same service instead of just having the original guy make the changes. I got my answer when the final instruction came: they wanted me to sound like the first guy.

I said, "I don't do impressions of other narrators."

I didn't have time to play in their sandbox.

And why is it that when the font is reduced to 8 point to make it 'fit', the direction is 'can you make it sound relaxed?'

I have more pet peeves that regard talent rather than clients, but there still are lots of noteworthy issues.

A recent favorite involved quoting per page pricing to produce a project. The sample had 1/2" margins and 12 point type. The actual job had closer to 1/4" margins and the type had shrink to 11 pt. Perhaps they thought I wouldn't notice,

I did and what they did represented about 11% more work than was agreed to.

Another "fun" one happened not that long ago when I lost a big project management job that I also would have done quite a bit of on. The client was sorry, but they got a much lower quote. Imagine my surprise when someone I know called to ask me for some referrals for lower priced talent and to see if I might be interested in some v.o. work, albeit quite a bit less than my going rate. Yeah, you got it, he was the bastard that low balled the job. He kept his profit margin intact but expected to hire actors for about 1/2 of what I had been paying.

It was a pretty ugly scene.

I'm pretty sure this pet peeve is limited to the P2P sites. It's actually two variations of the same pet peeve.

Variation A: When someone posts a job, receives auditions, makes some changes (usually minor) to the copy, and posts the revised copy as a new job and solicits a whole new batch of auditions.

Variation B: When a project consists of several different, but similar, pieces of copy that, presumably, will all be performed by the same voiceoverist and each piece is posted separately. (Even if each piece is to be awarded to a different voiceoverist, the auditions for just one piece ought to supply enough choices to cast the remaining ones.)

Script that has not been properly copy edited: little or no punctuation, terrible grammar, misspellings, sentence fragments, run-on sentences, etc.

SCRIPT IN ALL CAPS.

Being told they want me to mispronounce a word.

Going into an audition and being told that they want a non-announcery read, not getting the job, and then hearing the ad on the air with a VERY announcery read. I had no idea the prefix "non" could sometimes mean "very."

...especially when you've been foolish enough to accept a per finished minute rate.
