So my old reliable system finally bit the dust this week. I ran out and got a new on, with the thought that all I had to do was swap my Digigram sound card. Wrong. The new system, of course, is 64 bit, and the sound card only has 32 bit drivers. So I'm in the market for a new card. I'm not really in the mood to blow another $400 on a Digigram, so I'm looking at others. Specifically, the M-Audio cards.

Anyone have experience with these. Want to make some recommendations? All comments appreciated. BTW, I still am running my Nuendo software. It's what I love, and I know how to make it sing.
Thanks.

Are we talking about PCI cards? Or are the external USB boxes OK?

I use an M-Audio Fast Track Pro at home, and I am running Win 7 x64 with nary a problem.

Of course, you might want to look into the newest stuff, since Avid bought out M-Audio.

Thanks, Brad. I have a Fast Track Pro I used to take on the road with me. I may try that.

It might help to tell us what your sound chain is and what DAW (recording software) you are using.

Of the new sound-card, did you check online for diver updates??

You can also Go with a Firewire box like the ECHO AudioFire 2.
If you don't have a firewire port that's a simple PCI upgrade.

What software are you using? Some, if not many, only work with 32-bit (such as my Sound Forge). Hope you don't end up trying to return your new computer!

He says he's running Nuendo. M-Audio cards have worked well for years.
The Audiophile 192 has been reliable for years.

I like the tc electronic konnekt 6 firewire because of the other functions it has.

Ah, I missed his mention of Nuendo - I'm not familiar with it. But the point still stands - is the software compatible with 64-bit?

And Bill, I almost bought one of those TC Konnects awhile back based on your praises. I'm still using my trusty old Echo Mia in my Win 7 Pro 32-bit PC. It has had some driver issues, though. But then again, there's "the devil you know..."

Thanks, everyone.
Still trying to decide if I want to use the new box, or the video editor for all the voice stuff. The video editor is all Sony, and has a fresh copy of Sound Forge. I'll have to re-work the pigtail i/o to bring it to that side of the desk (massive horseshoe shaped) and that's what I'll do this week.
Had probs with the Nuendo dongle, but that may be a driver issue. I think I can fix that. We used Nuendo (Steinberg) in radio. I really love it - it's like Pro Tools, but without the expense.

I'll keep you posted.

Last I checked, Nuendo was $1800! Talk about overkill for VO, but I loved it when I was engineering for a music studio...
I live Steinberg's WaveLab, used it for years before the Mac transition 5 years ago. Now I see you can get it for Mac, so want to revisit it.
The Elements version for $100 should be all you need.

I use a Mackie Firewire card with Cubase at my home studio and it has been quite reliable.

With Nuendo I use RME and Steinberg gear.

I know you aren't looking to spend a lot, but I would seriously look at the Steinberg pres/converters like the MR816.

NUENDO AND CUBASE ROCK! I love them both.

Still working on this. I have a signal into the Fast Track Pro, now I need to get it into the computer. Hmmm. (shouldnt be this hard)

But I'm really really bummed that I can't use the trusty gear that I've built my studio with. As far as Nuendo, I was doing production as well as voice. Produced a couple of jingles along the way. I atually have the first version - maybe 1.6, so I didn't pay more than $300 for it. But I don't think the paralell port dongle is going to work either.

Soooo, that means I'll have to use the Sound Forge on my video editor. But I'm starting to consider buying an XP Pro system disc and just reinstalling it.

Thanks again for the help, and suggestions. I finally got the Fast Track Pro working a couple of hours ago. Sent a Sound Forge test to my client in London, and he says it's nice and clean. Just a minor tweak needed. Sound Forge is on the same system as my Vegas video editor, so maybe that's a good thing. Anyway, looks like I'm back in biz.
