I've arrived safe and sound at the Hinckley Island Hotel in the UK where VOX 2011 is just about to kick off. I've picked up my name badge and "goodie" bag and have checked into my room. It should be a very fun weekend. I'll post photos as I have opportunity, though it may not be later today, depending on how tired I am when I get back to my room this evening. _________________ Be well,

Deirdre,
You are so right. I just met Helen Quigley a few minutes ago, just before heading for the sack (moments away now). Darren Altman is here. Philip, of course. Elisa Canas doesn't post a whole lot here, but is a member. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting. Plus Pam Tierney and her Mom are here along with Cris Dukehart (I can't remember if Cris has joined yet or not). A great deal of fun was had by all. Now, to sleep. _________________ Be well,

Bob, I'm sure you're having a blast at VOX, and I'm looking forward to your report.
I can't wait till I get over there for one, but in the meantime, I'll just have to live vicariously.
Please tell our friends there that we all say "Hi!" _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

T'was a joyous affair from beginning to end.
I was only able to attend 7 of the break-out sessions because they were so loosely packed into a tight space around a slack timeframe.
Bed time was around 3.45am Sunday.
For breakfast 9.45am I had coffee, sausage, bacon, fried new potatos and eggs.

I posted this on a UK forum, so please forgive me as you won't know some of the names, but here's my account of Vox 2011:
So it's now Monday and the hangover has (thankfully) cleared! Wow! What an event! I know that some of you have been many times, but I have to say that it was such a great day. In this age of Facebook and Twitter, where everyone is a 'virtual' friend, it was so lovely to meet friends and colleagues for real and to get to know them.
I drove a heavily pregnant Posy Brewer there and we arrived at 1:30. We checked in, put our CD's and bumph on the demo table and headed to the bar, where I saw Lindsay Abbott and Bob Souer! So nice to see Linds, as we chat on Skype regularly. Bob's delightful and had just got off the plane from the US, his claim to fame is that he narrated... THE BIBLE!! I also met Layla who organised the event and the guys from voiceovers.co.uk. EDIT: They've been brilliant since I joined up and so helpful, really good guys to deal with.
My agent was there too and as I hadn't seen them in months, it was good to speak to them in person, instead of the usual calls and emails. I met John Calvert and his lovely wife Sonia and wished him luck for the award ceremony as he was up for a few. I recognised one voice above all the others in the bar and when I turned round, it was Adrian Juste! I used to listen to him on Radio 1 on a Saturday afternoon as a young boy!
After catching up with some of my interweb v/o peeps, it was was 4:30 and time for the speed-networking event and it was nuts! How do you sell yourself to producers in 2 minutes? I had a bottle of water, lost it... grabbed another one and lost that too - it was carnage in there!! When you looked by their feet, the CD's, cards, gifts, sweets, pens and badges that people had brought them was incredible! I can only cross my fingers, hope that I made a good impression and wait and see...
As I was slightly nervous about the whole speed-networking event, it was straight down to the bar for a well earned pint. The atmosphere in the bar and on the terrace was great, really buzzing, everyone looked genuinely pleased to be there catching up with friends that they haven't seen since the previous year. It was now 6:30 and people dispersed to get ready for the drinks reception and gala dinner.
Our tables were identified by different voiceover rates, I think we were on £78.20 (or somefing) and I didn't look to see who was on £21.40! I was sat between Cris Dukehart from the US and Elisa Cañas, so I was more than happy! The wine flowed, the food was great (lamb, mmmmm) and the company, wonderful. Also on our table was John Lovell, Helen Quigley, Alison Pitman, Natalie Cooper and some bloke called Phillip Banks! Post dinner, it was time for the voice awards, which were good fun. Bafta and ITV announcer Gina Mellotte hosted and looked fab in her yellow dress! Our very own John Calvert at Airforce won 2 awards, with Guy Harris (TOP bloke) and Laura Shavin voicing them.
After the dinner, a Samba group called The Sambassadors - clever! I love Brazilan music and Samba, so I was more than happy! What a sound. Dancing began and drinks carried on flowing... I went to the bar and vaguely remember commisarating my West Ham supporting agent James about his shoddy team! The rest of the evening became a blur... I chatted to Rich Sweetman and thanked him for having a listen to my reels and offering his thoughts, chatted to various producers, met Dave Watnaby and hypnotised Trish Bertram and Janine Cooper-Marshal! Good fun. Trish is an amazing subject!
Family Fortunes took place around 3am, compared by Des Lennis (Rich Sweetman) and things got chaotic! My last memory of the evening was chatting to Guy Harris until around 3:45, when I went to bed. He is lovely, so passionate, friendly and helpful, a true gent. I checked my phone the next day and didn't remember sending a tweet out at 3:50am saying "having a wonderful time at cox." Oops!!
The next morning, well... a few hours later, we had breakfast. Never has a fry-up been more needed I can tell you! People looked fuzzy and green to say the least, we said our goodbyes and I drove home with Posy. Slowly!! All in all, a fantastic day and night, the people I met were genuinely lovely and as I said to Philip, I was surprised by the lack of egos!
Here's to Vox 2012... once my liver has forgiven me! _________________ https://www.darrenaltman.com/
