So... my commercial demo is almost 3 years old - and I haven't touched it. I'd like to get part of one of the recent things I've done in there - or maybe two and I've dropped one but not sure it's working. I've messed with a few configurations but don't want to overwhelm anyone.

What do you think? Does this work? I've managed to keep it to barely a half second longer than the original.

demo I'm using

edit I'm considering

Thanks! Brutally honest opinions are appreciated.

The only thing that jumps out at me is the new care giver piece you've added is WAY longer that the other clips. It slows down the flow. I love the new clip and wonder if there is a shorter piece that you can use from the same audio.

Hey Melissa,
GREAT demos! Love your voice on these. I kind of like your original demo better. I agree with J Christopher that the Caregiver spot could be shortened. I heard it at, "They're called Caregivers..." then slice off the next line.
The ending of your "consideration" demo ends kind of odd to me. (The life on the beach line). It's so short and quick and doesn't really lend itself to a great way to leave a "gotta get her" impression. I prefer the end to your more musical ending of the original demo.
But you certainly have a great sound! Nicely done!

Melissa... I counted 12 spots in 01:11:236. Lots of good stuff to work with, but is there too little time allowed for each spot? My only suggestion would be to choose 7 or 8 of your best spots (including caregivers) and keep it at 1 minute. If caregivers is your best spot, place it up front. Anywhere else and it appears to be a speed bump to the flow of the demo. The only reason I use the term speed bump is because most of the other spots appear to be moving at a much faster pace than caregivers.

Thanks guys. I don't want to get into a whole redo of my demo. Actually all I really want to do is add a bit of the Caregiver spot because I don't have that type of read on the demo. But it IS longer than the rest so maybe jarring. I don't know that I want it to be the first either. I'll mess with some other configurations.

Hey X! Hope all's well with you mate. Here's my thoughts: The first spot (in both) I would say is just too short and doesn't add anything, it comes and goes in a flash. Also, for my ears, the music is a bit too loud, I'd ditch it.

BUT, I love the second edit. The Caregiver spot lets it breath as I found the first version far too choppy for my taste. I know the idea is to give a broad reflection of the styles that you can deliver, but there's a balance between demonstrating your abilities and making it a whirlwind of sound that might bombard the listening client. I agree with Bailey in this case.

I don't see anything wrong letting a newer version be a bit longer if necessary and less of an aural onslught! The second cut gets my vote. x

Where is the kitchen sink??

There is just too much packed into this demo, after a while it all starts to sound the same. Your changes are almost like rearranging, adding or deleting one speck of glitter on a collage; that one speck of glitter is not going to make a difference amongst all the other specks.

There is something going on with the processing too, it sounds almost like you're talking into a cardboard tube.

LOL!!! You should have seen it in its original state - with about 6 more spots - and too long - before I cut it down.

I'll do a new commercial demo at some point but for right now there are other priorities - and frankly - even though it's almost 3 years old - this one gets me lots of work. Right now all I want to do is add a bit of this spot because I don't have this type of read on the demo and I book this stuff a lot. Trying to figure out how to add this - even if I have to dump something from it.

I do agree with you that the caregiver spot shows something substantially different from the rest, Melissa, and I think that it's a useful addition to your demo.

I only listened to edits 3 and 4 - guess I had a slight preference for 4. I started to feel a bit of the kitchen-sink feeling too, while listening. There is a LOT in there! though the overall length seems right. But I do understand you not wanting to do major surgery right now on a demo that's working well for you.

So that said, until you do a major demo overhaul I doubt the little tweaks matter very much. I say, pick a new config that satisfies you for the short term and don't worry about it. Of course, I have earned $0 as a producer, so take my opinion FWIW. Inoccent

In any case, hope the addition gives you the return you're looking for. Smile
