From my days back in Ohio I recall the little town of Mantua - pronounced, of course, "MAN-away" (much to the chagrin of my opera-loving singing teachers!).

Here near Seattle there are Native American names that get murdered by non-locals. Try Sequim (pronounced "sqwimm"), Cle Elum (klee ELL-um) and Puyallup (pew-AL-uHobo Happy. I could go on!

Maybe I'm a little perverse, but I'll admit, I do find these sorts of things fun. They're probably a lot more fun when you're not the one doing the pickups, though. Rolls Eyes

Originally, Bexar was pronounced "BAY-har". Then the colonists took over. Smile And don't forget "guad-a-LOOP" (Guadalupe) in Austin.

Diane,

In North Carolina that's how they pronounce those storms that start in the warm ocean waters and get names when they get big enough.

And in your neighborhood Leominster is not Leo Minster but Lemon Stir, yes?

Of course in Arizona the town of Gila Bend (located on a bend in the Gila river of all things), which often has the highest temperature in the nation, would give us joy. Instead of calling it HEE-la Bend, out of state news and weather casters would call it GUY-la Bend.

But then there's Casa Grande which should be the Spanish CAH-sah GRAHN-day, but we call KEH-suh GRAND.

Yep. And even bilingual folks here pronounce Guadalupe Street as "Gwod-a-loop".

That said, if anyone needs help speaking Texican, I'm your go-to cowboy.

When I was doing time in Liberal, KS, I learned that when the ArkanSAW River passes through Kansas, it becomes the ArKANsas River (no saw on the end).

Couch Street in Portland? Pronounced COOCH.

Chartres Street in New Orleans? The French might say SHAR-truh, but I heard the locals call it CHA-tuhz with a thick Cajun accent.

As are the ones in MA and CT. They were all pronounced ber-LIN until World War I, although some sources claim this is an urban legend and they were always pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable.
