What's yours is yours, what theirs is theirs and no amount of non-co-operation or double dealing is going to change that. I quite like living with this thought in mind - "What do we live for if not to make life less difficult for others".

Anthony,

I believe you've done and are doing the right thing. That
sort of thing comes back to you two fold.

On a related note, could you please send me all of your
regular gig/contacts that you've worked for in the past 2 years?
A word document or Hobo LaughingF file is fine. Wink Laugh

Anthony, some of these sorts of thoughts went through my head when I read that too (after I stopped laughing - it is funny). And I went through a phase not so long ago where I thought maybe giving stuff away wasn't a good thing, but it passed quickly, even when I seemed to lose out.

Casting your bread upon the waters isn't necessarily a great idea if you're surrounded by gulls. Oh dear, my metaphors do tend towards the avian...

What I mean is this. There are some things I wouldn't give away in a public forum - even this one. You really never know who is out there and who they are and what they will do with the information. But one-on-one, or among friends (privately), then yes. It's kind of icky to think in terms of what one might gain from it although "They" say there is no such thing as pure altruism. But gain is certainly measured in all kinds of currency, including the satisfaction of knowing you've helped someone else and done the right thing.

But I know you know all that.

I just follow DeWitt's credo:

"I can teach you every skill I have and you'll still never be as good as I am."

But seriously-- there are some things one shouldn't share.
Listen to your inner voice for this stuff-- there are simply times when you shouldn't spill the recipe of what makes things work for you.

Skills-- share away.
The actual techniques that make your voice work the way it does---
Share, share, share.
How to scream. How to do an Instant Indian Accent.

Motivation or mental warm-ups are nobody's business but your own.
How do you cry?
shhhhh.

Frank,

My thoughts exactly. When some else is cast for a job I hoped to get, it doesn't diminish me. By the same token, virtually every time I do get cast for a job, there were a bunch of other folks who were hoping to get that job and didn't get it. I am taking nothing away from any of them. Nor when they get cast and I don't, does anyone take anything away from me.

No one is going to win every audition or book repeat business with every contact. (Well, except Banksey, maybe!)

I firmly believe there is ample work for people with the talent to deliver the goods.

Somehow the Golden Rule seems to apply here.....as it does in all of my life.

Oh, the phychology of it all. One thing I believe: There are NO secrets in the universe. Essentially, mastery is simply finding what you already know, and producing it. It's like ... a Jung thang. You know, the collective subconsciousness. Now, if I can help somebody get there, or if they help me get there, well, that's absolutely transformational. I can't, for the life in me, figure out why else we're on this friggin' planet.

Ignite the passion, and let it flow. That's the only way to go!

Funny, I've been wondering about this same thing from the opposite perspective lately. I'll always answer a question on this board if it's about voiceover and if I think I know the answer or if I think I can be helpful somehow. Concern about potential competition is never an issue.

But it's the other times -- when people are sharing little personal anecdotes or asides -- that I clam up. I often begin to write a response to those but then erase it, deciding in the end that I'm not sure how much of the rest of me I want to share.

Heck, I'm not even sure if I'm going to post this...

But TC, that's the whole thing about being here... we are a fun group of folks - except Banksey who is just plain - "Banksey" Laugh , who are a small tight knit family community.

Share and have fun with this group, becuase in the end you'll feel better for being here and sharing your personal side...

anyone sick yet?

No, really this is the one place it's safe to share who you are... were not going to bite - much.

Have fun.

Toodles,

Frank F

The real reasons I try to avoid telling all I know are:

(1) I usually bore everyone within earshot.

(2) Often, I'm wrong.

I have always appreciated those who took the time to stop during their ascent up the ladder of success, and reach back to give me a helping hand. I would not be where I am today if others did not share their knowledge with me. Sooner or later, it all comes back around.

Just as love dies with the person who does not share their love, knowledge dies in the mind of those who do not share knowledge.

But above all... keep your dryer lint screen clean.
