I've been Googling around and it seems that I may be the only ISDN equipped VO studio here in Eastern Connecticut near Foxwoods/MGM and Mohegan Sun Casinos. I'm sure there's business to be had there. Visiting stars/celebs with VO work to do possibly?
Is anyone familiar with a good/well respected studio directory that I could list with? The same Google search hasn't turned up much that way. Thinking maybe I should pick Dave at Digifon's brain on this one. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

I would simply suggest finding who the people are who may use your ISDN services. Since you seem to have an inkling of the areas where these people congregate, make a list of the areas, print some cards and flyers, and hand deliver them to the folks whom need your service.
In Park City, Utah; home of the Sundance Film Festival, great skiing and wild life for the stars of film stage and politics - I asked a couple of friends to mention my studio. I did some flyer passing during Sundance and dropped an email or two to a few folks who might use ISDN.
The simple idea worked well. within a few months I was getting knocks on my door from numerous stars and producers - and even got a little work for my VO services.
For your studio, you should remember the areas which you mentioned - Foxwoods/MGM, etc. might have ISDN already for their guests. Make a call - it won't hurt - and find out whether or not they do or do not have ISDN. This could be the first step in mentioning your business facility to the proprietors. If you don't ask, you don't get!
National listing are nice, but if you cannot find them how do you expect a potential client to find the listing(s)?
And, did I forget to mention how and where you may send the 15% of any booking fees (for my business suggestion...?
Good luck!

I'd be surprised if Foxwoods/MGM Grand had ISDN facilities, but I'd also be surprised if Sonalysts didn't. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

That's an easy question to answer Lee. My old band-mate Curt Ramm is the studio manager for Powerstation NE.
Thanks for the idea Frank. I'll be sure to put your name on several sacks of money, :) _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

I've been on a small number of sites that list ISDN users such as digifon.com, but I couldn't tell you of one call I've gotten asking to use it. You might try contacting major radio networks, especially ones that do interviews such as NPR, and major recording studios in LA and NYC just to let them know you can hook them up for live feeds.

As with anything else the internet is probably not the answer. Start talking to people and get them talking to other people.
I don't hire my studio to others but the BBC use it on a regular basis. At the lowest end of the programme budget scale I get paid $40 for walking the dogs while someone talks to BBC Radio Bristol about their extensive collection of cloaked Klingon Battle Cruiser models. |

Oh, forgot to mention this: I did not start out to rent out the studio. I had been asked by a friend if someone could use my ISDN equipment. Then, thinking logically, I thought it might be a good idea to mention the studio to others who might need to use the equipment while in Utah.
I never know who will knock at the door or at what time of day -- or night. The service offers not a great income, but the ability to get to know some fun people. And as Phillip said: "I get paid $40 for walking the dogs while someone talks to...". I do charge a bit more than Phillip - because I can.

Gotcha. I wasn't really looking to make alot out of it. I looking at it more as another avenue to make connections...and keep the room as busy as possible. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

BBC local stations have limited budgets so I get what I'm given if I introduced a proper fee structure the producers would simply not bother or do a phone interview.
A very good VO friend had a tech problem with his ISDN studio a few years ago and when asked to do a number of TV and radio commercials came to use my studio.
"Look" he said " this is a big deal for me so take this .." he handed me $300. Unfair really as I only had one dog at the time. |
