I wish I had pics to back this up. Several weeks ago we had a hummingbird in the kitchen. It was in the evening. Kate came running upstairs to say that there was "a big bee" flying around by the kitchen ceiling. It was a hummingbird....chirping and scared as it flew around the room. I managed to get it to sit on the end of a kitchen broom..and finally got it to, and out of the back door,

I've never been so close to such a small and delicate bird.

Pretty neat experience!

Many years ago I hosted a desert gardening show for the PBS stations in our area. We traveled down to Tucson and the Sonora Desert Museum which is really much more of a zoo and botanical garden than a museum. They have this hummingbird exhibit where you walk freely among 200 or so busy hummingbirds. They search you for stray hairs to use in building their nests. Someday I'll dig up a clip of me, nose to beak with these guys.

Hummingbirds are actually quite social with people. We have several Rufus that live around our house. I set a feeder out and they come right up to me while taking a drink no more than a foot away. I read you can put sugar water in your hand and they will light on your hand and drink. It takes a little patience but once they are secure that you are friendly they will do it over and over.

I've got attuned to their noises and sounds and when I'm out and about elsewhere and hear that familiar sound I always look around to try and spot them.

When on our honeymoon in Costa Rican rainforests we were camping and while walking to breakfast one morining a black with brilliant purple hummer was just spread out in a puddle. It wouldn't budge. We knelt down and checked it out for quite a while. It would just look around and go about bathing. After several minutes of this it flew just above our heads and landed on a branch and hung out.

in may, i set out a hummingbird feeder on a tree branch at a friend's cabin in the mountains. the branch was bent over from snow, so now -- since the snow melted -- the feeder is 20' off the ground !

Their wings actually beat in a figure 8 pattern...
Amazing - and scrappy - little birds!
(there's one on the feeder outside my studio window right now!)
