Is "voiceover" the correct spelling for the term? I write it a lot in advertising myself, and want it right... but... is that the ACTUAL spelling. Some spell it: "voice-over", some "voiceover", some "Voice-Over". Any concrete answer?

Yes. All of the above.

If you Google - voiceover - you get almost 17 million hits
If you Google - "voice over" (forcing those two words together) - you get 36 million hits (the hyphen makes no diff to Google)
If you Google - "will voice for food" - you get 96 results, so I'd go for one of the other two.

Best advice, if you're trying to include tags and search terms to your website and such, use both. Also Voice Actor, Voice Talent, VO, Voice of God, Voice Talker, and if you're in the UK, voiceoverist and gobshite are popular terms.

Thank you Lee, Diane, and Bruce. I suspected that are there several ways to get it across without being wrong. I feel much better now... will cancel my trip to the therapist today, and will treat my voice to a small bowl of chocolate strawberry swirl ice cream. Laugh

A wise choice though maybe not if you have a session right after the ice cream. On my blog, I use the term "voiceover" (without space or endash) just to offer some focus to my writing. No point in trying to be all things to all people. That's the quickest way to accomplishing nothing with no one.

Another thanks to Bob and Lizdon. Bob, I agree with you, and that's how I've been using it. I know that most people don't care, but I think it's somewhat important. Lizdon... enjoyed the Billy Preston! Thanks.

I'm lobbying for us to choose "voiceover" so as to separate us from searches for Apple's "voice over" aHobo Tounge and a bazillion searches for "voice over IP."

There is an ancient discussion of this somewhere on this board, but good luck trying to find it.

I tend to use voice-over for historical reasons (the original term, as I understand it, was a compound noun: voice-over-picture). I also tend to use voiceover when I'm not thinking too hard about it Smile

Yeah, I prefer "voiceover" for the same reason Amy gives about the "voice over IP" issue.

Some people can get very passionate about it, but— as the others before me have so eloquently stated— there isn't a distinct industry standard.

Ice cream is most certainly in order.

Google Voiceover... and your 1st hit is... Pro Voice Overs $45

Google Voice Over... and your 1st hit is... Voice Overs $45 in 1 hour

Google Voiceoverist... and you get Cooper & Banks

It's too bad that the term voiceover/voice over covers all degrees of VO professionalism... from the Masters down to the bottom feeders.
Perhaps the term Voiceoverist would be a better definition... until a school of carp start using it on their websites.
