Sorry, but they are "royalty free" which means you don't pay later, but you do pay now, $2 and up. Still, it's another source, and they might have what just what you're looking for.

Thanks!

I didn't spend more than a few minutes on the site and didn't sign up... but it looks pretty free to me. Thanks for the tip Darren, will have a closer look when I find myself in need of something sfx'y

Today I was looking for a sound effect of a New York street and that site had a couple of samples of Wall Street, a NY traffic jam with lots of car horns, Broadway and more. RESULT! It's also got free music too.

I remember Freeplaymusic.com started out like that. You had to very carefully read the terms and conditions though. It wasn't "free" for commercial broadcast. Several guys who worked for my former employer used the music in spots. Since the music was digitally watermarked the company was able to chase down the uses...and ended up suing the company.

How does that work, exactly?

I can't explain too technically but....from what I understand there is a watermark or sonic signature embedded in the audio that will allow detection of that piece of audio in much the same way as popular music play can be detected. The music industry uses this kind of data to determine airplay...that contributes to chart positions for popular singles.
