Okay, maybe one can, but I happened upon this one this evening. Yeah, yeah, it's probably stuff that we all already know, but it can't hurt to have the link handy to send to someone else you know who could use it. Wink

I love how the link to 'pernickety' goes to a definition that says, 'persnickety.' Better not tell the Sargento cheese people.

Caught me on one so far: diphtheria

Funny, there's a bank in the upper Midwest that voice for that insists I call them FED-rul instead of Federal.

I try never to say mauve. I call it muted cranberry.

I did quite well on those, but a fat handful are complete shifts in the language that likely can't be reversed. I refer you to Stephen Fry on language (YouTube or the long version on iTunes audio).

You're supposed to pronounce the "l" in "yolk?" Not where I come from.

I ran through the list and was slightly bemused... "What's the problem here?" I thought... "These are no problem." then I realized that it was highlighting of the modern-day North American corruption of English words. When I first came over, this used to bother me a lot... but over the years I've found myself falling into the Stephen Fry camp, and have taken to shrugging my shoulders and not worrying about it too much.

OK, I lied. It's soLder ... not soDDer ... and Caramel has bloody great big "A" in the middle of it. Carmel is a mountain in Israel.

Grump.

I was SOOO happy to see "realtor" in that list. I can't tell you how many times I've heard realtors can themselves "realitors".

I know you think you're awesome and all, but you're not worthy of extra syllables.

Jew-ler-y is one of my pet peeves.

Right after real-i-tor.

I like their take on "candidate" but I have been instructed to say "candid-dit" by clients— a pronunciation I hate.

If I were Ogden Nash, I could make a poem out of that last complaint.

We have a jeweler in the Hartford area who had a custom jingle made by one of the local studios and, yep, they sang "Gem Jew-ler-ree."

Needless to say, they got a free re-sing about a week later. Oddly enough, the owner, who often did his own commercials (ugh) pronounced it that way, so the jingle guys must have thought that's how he wanted it. My guess is nobody wanted to point out the error when he said it, but people said something when it was the singers doing it.

All bets are off when it comes to locally written, produced, sung and (especially) client-voiced advertising. They say anything they damned well want to say, the way they want to say it.

Production Director: "But your name is spelled 'Raymond Luxury Yacht.'"
Client: "It's pronounced 'Throat Warbler Mangrove.'"
