Earlier this afternoon I headed out with Jazz and Bess to walk from Portknockie to Findochty. Lovely time it was too!

There is a point near the end of the walk where we come down a cliff path and go on to the east beach in Findochty. I noticed a lady in her late 60's and a very young boy filling buckets with sand near to where me and the collies would make our beach landing. The young boy saw Jazz and Bess, his reaction was to scream and cry; he was very distressed.

"Two years ago my grandson was attacked by a Pit Bull Terrier and bitten in the face so he's terrified of dogs" explained Grandma. I didn't react, I simply stood and chatted with her and made the odd comment to her Grandson, Joseph aged 7. As I chatted I called Bess to me, I crouched down, she sat and I made a fuss of her. Needless to say Jazz joined the gathering as the conversation continued.

After about 15- 20 minutes I walked along the beach with the two dogs leaving Grandma and Joseph collecting buckets of sand.

What happened in those 20 minutes is significant. Joseph went from blind, screaming terror because of the proximity of dogs to first touching Bess, then stroking her and tickling behind the ears, allowing Jazz to move closer so he could stroke him and finally to approaching Jazz as he lay in the sand so he could spend a little more time with him.

No more than 100 yards along the shore, do you know, I think I got something in my eye.

Philip,

Very sweet story. Thank you for sharing, but how did the sand get all the way from Scotland to Minnesota, and so quickly?

This is such a wonderful story, Philip— thank you.

Bob's comment is making me blink.
I'm sure it's something obvious, but I can't see it.

wonderful story and as I sit here with my Mom's pooch sitting on my desk guarding all that is happening out of the window, another reminder of how much better we are when we have furry babies with responsible parents in our lives. I'll have to remember that feeling when another of his farts wafts my way.

The three of you have affected real change in that boy's life that will more than likely help him be less fearful from here forward. #butterflyeffect

Wonderful story Philip. I have many days when the company of dogs is much prefered over the company of people. Cheers!!
