I don't think I've ever mic'd that far away from any mic in any situation ever unless I was creating sfx or something. I'm working at about 4". | That's the DJ radio guy in you, falling in love with the mics proximity effect on his voice. This is acting, not radio announcer- back off the mic and let the voice bloom. If you're trying to cover up the room by playing it close to the mic, FIX the room.
Quote: | The room is rather small and concrete block walls - very low ceiling - guess I could use some deadening. |
So I was not too far off. Without even seeing the room I can tell you're going to need bass trapping and wideband absorption panels on 90% of the walls and ceiling.

That confirms it then- they don't know what they are talking about. By simply implementing the basic information I've stated above, your audio and sound will dramatically improve, and you won't need a new tube.
This cycle of "I'm not happy with my mic" stuff will go on and on until you implement the acoustical changes in your room. Believe me you're not the first guy to come here looking for that magic tube to pop into his mic. There is no such thing, it does not exist.
The simple truth is 90% of our sound comes from the room we record in, if you room sounds like crap your audio will sound like crap. It's just that easy.
Quote: | yeah, working at 4" gives them to me, clearly, but usually I can micro-edit them out. | That's micro managing. Don't treat the symptoms, fix the problems by deadening the room echos and comb filtering effect so that you are a single sound source, and back off the mic. _________________ The Blog:

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong. |
