I used to like to make my own SFX for productions whenever possible and was known as the guy who would jump at the chance to do that. One day in 2006, our CSD needed the SFX of a loud slurping through a straw and was unhappy with the canned SFX he had, so he came to me.

I have another one I cannot locate at the moment, but it involved needing a *powerful wet sneeze*, ground pepper, and...well, you can imagine the "fun"...

If you listen to that file at 4.1 seconds, you can actually hear me *inhaling* the liquid - quite unintentionally I assure you!

I guess what I have in mind for this thread are sort of *Three Stooges* type painful *audio incidents*, and not necessarily just SFX...like tripping over a mic boom, or getting a paper-cut during a read as you fiddle with the script, or having someone in the background make a stupid noise during a take and a knock-down-drag-out ensues, LOL...that kind of thing Wink

I don't have the audio, but I do have the story:

A client wanted some voiceover for some flash presentations/training on office policies - one of them being sexual harassment. I got a local female vo, engineer and studio where we could record together. One of the scenes had to do with a potential new hire being shown around the workplace and come across another employee viewing porn on an office computer.

The content of that computer would not be shown, but there were to be sound effects that would make it obvious that that was what was being watched.

Good Lord, that was awkward.

It wasn't dirty talk or anything, just heavy breathing, etc. It was VERY difficult to do more than about 3-4 seconds of that without one or the both of us laughing. Looking through the glass and seeing the engineer in tears also made it difficult.

It turns out that all of that was for nothing. Apparently the end client didn't appreciate the artistry (which is funny, as we were only doing what they requested in the script). So they cut it out.

But the check still cashed, and it's something that I will not soon forget.

I've got a couple of really rude burps and strange noises that have popped out doing recording sessions. I just edit them out and then save them in case they're needed for future deliberate use. Shocked

At least twenty years ago I recorded the voice of a talking skull (you might call it a toy? I never saw the final product), with lots of "spooky" lines and several demonic laughs. Goaded by the producer, I got a little carried away with the laughs and felt myself nearly pass out. For a few years after that, every time I laughed heartily I felt myself start to go light headed. I must have created a mini aneurysm or some such that thankfully has healed. I've since learned how to fake some of those noises with less actual exertion.

Same as Bruce- I came very close to passing out during a couple of DragonBall Z recording sessions. Those screams are intense! I know one actor who actually did pass out.

Also, you know that sound that can come from your nasal passage if you are a bit congested? An engineer I work with occasionally refers to those as 'nose farts'. Ew.

Similar story to the erotic sounds...

When I worked at KyXy in San Diego, the station "haunted" the "Star of India" - a wonderful 3-masted schooner in San Diego Bay - really quite a major undertaking. As people walked through the Captain's cabin and conference room, the speakers were pumping out spooky sounds of dead sailors groaning.

and I were in a booth on opposite sides of the console each with our own mic - groaning and being generally spooky - but it is amazing how subtly the sound can change and conjure up a whole different meaning. We kept the tape rolling, and would glance at each other when that shift started to occur and try to get back to dead moans and groans without cracking up.

And during the same "haunting" we were shooting a promo for TV and I was lying in a casket with a smoke machine pumping out spooky mist - and was supposed to open the casket as the hosts said a specific line. I suddenly couldn't breathe and flung open the casket lid to get some air. The smoke machine had replaced all the air. My gasping wasn't spooky - or maybe I hadn't opened the lid on cue - so we had to shoot it again - after I recovered.
