VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

I was doing an e-learning project earlier, and recorded listening to input only (still learning routing on new system).

We recorded over 30 minutes of audio, and all is fine except for about some strange noise for about 3 minutes about 5 minutes in.

Can anybody identify what this is? I included 4 seconds of the audio just before it, so you can hear that it was fine.

Oh I know that type of sound well, unfortunately! Woe it be to me to *technically* diagnose it (I am NO engineer), but the Engineers I've always worked with just described it as "digital blipping" - apparently happens sometimes when the hard drive is trying to "catch up" while processing digital data - er, something like that.

Sometimes it's printed to the take, and sometimes it just pops up on playback with no permanent destruction. If it's permanent, you'll have to re-record that section and drop it in Frown

I'm certain there are more techinically savvy folks on here who can better explain it, but I heard it and just had to pop on and say "Yes! My systems have at one time or another been possessd by the *Blipping Demon* too!" LOL.

P.S. Also, it kinda sounds like dirty DAT player heads - I don't know what you're using to record, but if it's DAT, dirty heads can sound like that as well.

I posted the same thing on an engineers forum and yours seems to be the most viable reason.

No idea why it would that! It was only of under 5 minutes of a 30 minute session and has not manifested itself in the last week again.

I don't use DAT anymore, so must be the HDD.

try playing with your buffer settings in your recording software setup - taking the buffer up/down - you can probably eliminate this.

LOL! I could not think of what our Chief always used to say whenever I'd have a "blipping" experience like that, but that was it. He'd mutter about *the buffer settings*, then he'd get in there and fiddle around, shake his head, mutter some more about the buffer settings, and finally shuffle away to go get some coffee and watch the trains out the window...

Yeah adjust the buffer size.

Make sure all other programs, bluetooth, internet- anything not essential to recording are turned off. Max out your RAM or at least 4GB.

List your audio chain Mix, preamp, interface, computer etc...

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong.

Todd, the problem is that it has not happened again (Well..not quite a problem:-) ) so experimenting with it until it is correct is near impossible.

Mike, my chain is
SSL Alpha Channel- RME FF800 (via SPDIF) - PC - Sound Forge

PC is AMD X64 with 2gb RAM

Another engineer suggested it is a clocking problem. I'm not sure it would be, as the RME clock is pretty reliable and setup is correct.

Oh, I should add, I recently succumbed to activating the Net on the DAW PC (updating drivers etc, uploading/downloading client files from another PC was becoming too much of a nuisance) and for some reason I cannot get the log-in connection to work,only the permanent connection, so the Net is always on. Probably a router setting somewhere.

Thanks DB, not my voice, though. I am just engineer. He is an incredible talent. I realized with this project; 30 minutes of audio and I did not need to edit out a single breath! He is a cyborg.
