|
|
Every voice is different, of course, but I always come back to three mics in my studio: the Sennheiser 421U, Sennheiser MKH416 and the Electro Voice RE20. No mic is for everyone, but these work for me.
The RE20 can develop a need for rehab with age, particularly the internal foam, which disintegrates with time but is an important part of the mic. Factory repair has become ridiculously expensive, but I recently found a former EV tech who does great, factory-grade repair, refurb and refinish. He just did two of my three and will soon do the third. Price ranges from $99 to $150, far below EV's $250 minimum. Great communication, fast turnaround. I'm very impressed and wanted to give him some well-deserved exposure.

I don't own an RE-20 but I used one on the air every day for 10 years - a great mic, and so is the RE-27nd. I always had great results from EV mics.
Great mics to have in ye olde mic locker! _________________ ~Shock

how would one know if one's re-20 needs a refurb? i read recently that if, when shaked, it has a small rattling sound as though there are tiny grains inside, well by golly it's refurb time. yes? no? _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

There is a plastic half dome that is part of the element that will fall off eventually, due to age or a shock.
I had my RE-20 factory serviced and was satisfied. No bells or whistles, just back to what it was supposed to sound like.
That was the last time I ever used it as a kick drum microphone however. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

Yes. This means the foam has deteriorated and the element is bouncing around in there. Not good. |
