Hello all. Obviously I am a newbie but would just like to first off thank DB and Bruce for allowing me to join this forum in which I've heard great things about, and would also like to introduce myself. I am from Cincinnati, OH and my name is Ryan (most know me as Dez) and I've always been somewhat of a "character." Currently I am a history teacher and a college baseball coach and have never really had the time to pursue or even give a try at becoming a voice over. I have always been interested in the art as well as animation, movies, video games, and everything else that goes hand-in-hand with the entertainment business and am looking forward to learning from you all.
Looking to change things up in my career I have decided to give this a go. I have contacted several professional voice over talents and read up on some books on how to get started up and they have ALL responded respectfully and have helped me understand what I need to do to get started and now it's just the motivation and the relationships within the industry that I need to build upon, and see this as a great opportunity to do so. I know that a career in VO is VERY competitive and I would love any responses/help/critiques/etc as I believe this will be a very humbling experience. Again I would just like to say hello and really look forward to hearing your stories/experiences/opportunities and new ideas. |

Thanks for the welcoming everyone!!! Looks like I'm gonna have to hit the ground running around here Definitely looking forward to it.
I am looking into some voice over/acting classes here in Cincinnati and have found a few and having ZERO experience I am curious what all they can teach for acting/voice over... Just trying to get an idea before I drop $164 |

Welcome.
One thing you'll find as you explore the wonderful world of VO is that somethings work well for some people and not so much for others. Just getting started, look for introductory classes. They are usually cheaper and let you meet the teacher and see how you respond to their style of teaching. You will have to put out some money, but that is another aspect of the biz not everyone rushes to tell you. It can get expensive. Wait until you start buying mics. That's when the real fun starts.
Good luck and keep us posted. The archives here have a ton of invaluable info. You just need to dig it out. Have fun. |

hiya dez - welcome to the hoopla! this is a great resource.
now ... about that $164. just WHAT are they promising for $164? i have been wrong before ... a lot. but this smells like a demo-mill to me. and, if so, all you'll get is more space in your wallet. there are a lot of scam artists out there who like to prey on folks like you interested in breaking into the VO-biz. on the other hand, there is a LOT of great training out there too. with the limited information, though, this smells a little bit. if they tell you you'll walk out the door with a "professional demo" in hand ... run!
trust but verify. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Welcome aboard, matey!
You will find this is a group of very supportive, incredibly honest and superbly talented folks, right here on the ol' vo-bb.
As you are getting started, it's really easy to get sucked into a lot of different classes and whatnot. Some are great. Some are not-so-great.
As you are looking at your options, feel free to come here and post things you are thinkin' about. Some people here may have first hand knowledge that can point you in the right direction -- or help you avoid the wrong direction (even MORE important!). Discretion is a good thing, and often folks here may private message you with their personal opinion when some charlatan is romancing you -- AND YOUR WALLET!
I will tell you right up front, and I think 99.99 percent of the vobb-ers would agree, that you cannot beat Nancy Wolfson when it comes to coaching. Period. She's the best in the biz. She works by phone or in person (she's in LA). Don't be afraid of the phoners with her, they are very very effective. www.braintracksaudio.com. Tell 'er you were sent by the VO dash BB.
cheers!

Hey Dez!
Welcome to the par-tay. There is s ton to learn. Take your time and enjoy the ride. CC's dead on with the Nancy recommendation....she's my coach too.
There are other coaches out there too.... Just watch out for those that offer a "quick route" to success. It's a marathon...not a sprint. Realize that rejection in part of the game. Above all, be patient.
The good news? It's the coolest business you'll ever enter into.
Always challenging.
I love it. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

I may be wrong, God knows I often am, but I'm thinking Nancy Wolfson should be several steps down the line for you, not a first or early step. I think she's best suited for people who are actively in the voicework business at some level. There's a lot shorthand, lingo, experience that would be good to have before walking into her "office". Hopefully there are some workshops nearby that you can attend at a reasonable price first.

Wow I'm really digging the support and advice and it's great to get it from great people like you guys... I'm extremely excited to get something going and really appreciate the warm welcome and help!
Even though I'm almost 30 I'm big into doing cartoon voice overs and from what I hear they are hard to get. My grandfather did comics for the New York Times and since then I have been interested in Disney Movies and Cartoons... Guess that's just the kid in me Thanks again guys, I'm digging in to the old posts and am really learning a lot... And Bruce I couldn't agree more, I need to get the lingo down and some experience first...Gotta start somewhere and get a lil "wet behind the ears." |

Welcome Dez!
Don't forget the cake - make it chocolate pls.
You'll learn a lot here. If you have a particular interest in animation look up Bob Bergen, Pat Fraley, Richard Horvitz. Pat has a lot of free downloads on his site that might be helpful to you.
You'll like it here. |
