Hey Guys,

Can you give me some standard rates for audio books by the word? I have a client that is asking for a rate by the word for a 24,000 word book.

I've only worked with a company that pays either by the page or per hour of finished audio.

Thanks!

24000 words is about 2 and a half hours, maybe a bit less, so that can give you an idea of how much it's worth when you consider your PFH rate.

In general, the going rate for audiobook narration can range from as low as a paltry .02 per word up to around .10 / word maximum. Normally figure somewhere in the .06 / word range.

Books are usually quoted as $/pfh (per finished hour) and I use 9,500 words per hour as my measure. While that would make your book a 2.5 hour project I'd be tempted to round up.

Turns out, this client was a novice and went with a bid of $250 for the whole book.

No great loss.

Can you imagine the 'quality' he'll be getting for that rate??? Makes one shudder.
