|
I just bought a Sennehiser 416 from vo-bb'er Josh Mahler (hi Josh). I'm heading to Los Angeles next week for a few days, and plan to pack the 416 as part of my compact road kit.
Here's my question: The 416 exactly fits the bitchin' pipe-style travel tube that comes with the Rode NTG-3, and I'm planning to use it thusly. If you haven't seen it, this tube is a rugged thing of beauty. It could also conceivably be viewed as a weapon.
Am I gonna have hassles with the TSA at the airport checkpoints over this thing? Thoughts? _________________ Billy James

If you are carrying it on, prepare totally unpack it and be ready for idiots to handle it.
I carry mine in my hand luggage all the time. It's always flagged and wiped for chemical residue. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Acoustics are counter-intuitive. If one thing is certain about acoustics, it is that if anything seems obvious it is probably wrong. |

I've flown overseas with my NTG-3 in the tube. No problem. They may ask to see it...but in my experience that was it. Quick and easy.
Word to the wise: Don't wear those flip flops with the "gag fuse" attached. Makes the TSA guys edgy. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Leave the shotgun shells out of it and you'll be OK...
Kidding aside, keep the 416 very handy for TSA and educate them on what it is and why you need it. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

i always warn them beforehand - and have the mic out of the case on top of everything. and i say, in a loud, clear, non-accented american male voice, "i am a voice talker & and i am transporting a microphone, i took it out so you can see it."
no, really, i do. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I usually take mine out of my computer case and place it in the TSA tub alongside my phone, watch, and general pocket litter. It always get a little scrutiny. I tell them what it is and ask them to please not drop it 'cause the sucker is expensive.
Funny but it rarely gets noticed when I'm leaving LA. Those guys are probably used to seeing mics pass through. _________________ Bob Ransom

YMMV...
For example, leaving Miami on my way to FaffCon, not a single thing in the backpack that holds my travel rig got a second look. On the way back, they wanted to see everything. My 416 and my MicPort Pro got the most scrutiny. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

I have tapped a business card to my 416 case and it seems to help the TSA understand the situation. _________________ Ben

I've traveled with it in its original case (in my rolling carry-on and have never been asked about it.) Maybe I'm just lucky.
Whatever you do, don't call it a shotgun mic... it's just a microphone... tell them, "Yeah, this mic is the bomb!"

In the UK if they find a VO1A they have it destroyed. It's not a security issue merely an act of kindness. |

So what brings this attack on Harlan Hogan's mic? The reviews have certainly been very favorable--- |

Some silly asides are simply that, no agenda. |
