|
|
I've had the Neti Pot for a couple of years, and have used it a couple of times. But each time, it didn't seem as though the result was what I'd expected after reading the rave reviews from many of you folks and others.
My 'condition' (nasal passages that seem to constrict at will) was diagnosed a decade ago as an allergy to Juniper. The guy is a quack; there's no Juniper anywhere near here, and I don't even think it's an allergy, because it can happen and then clear in a few hours while remaining in the same environment.
So I just tried the Neti Pot again, and this time the result was a definite change for the better. But now I wonder, of those who use their Neti Pot (fairly) regularly: how often do you use it for best results... and do you find particular points during the day better than others (say, just after waking, etc.)?
Many, many thanks! _________________ Mike

One time a day if I feel a congestion. Make sure to use it a while before having to record anything, since it takes some time before the water clears out. You'll sound a bit nasal until then. |

I use mine whenever I feel the need and will do so for about a week, once a day. I have the same issues with my nasal passages and have found that if I start using at the first signs of allergies or congestion or sneezing then I tend to fend off the major illnesses (including sins infections!) _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. I use it once a day, every day. But then I live with a cat that I'm allergic to! I'm one of the rave reviewers, but it did take me awhile to get the full benefit.
[possible ick alert]
For awhile I was so stuffed up that the water couldn't even flow through, but eventually that moved into a period of noticeable "discharge". [sorry!] After a few weeks though, it just became part of my daily routine of keeping myself clear and unobstructed.
Remember not to stop your nose and blow after you've just done it. Allow the water to flow out with gravity, then try blowing freely through both nostrils before blowing normally. Sometimes, if I'm really sick, I'll use the pot twice a day, but I actually never get severe colds anymore since I've been using it for awhile. Any cold symptoms tend to be shortlived and very light. It's been a blessing for my adult onset asthma.

I've upgraded from Neti to the one where you blast water up into your sinuses. Feels a bit like being waterboarded, but it gets in deeper than the neti.
I basically only use it when I'm sick or hit with allergies. _________________ Jeff

Don't blow your nose hard!! Water can move up into your ear canals, which is an annoying occurrence. |

Sometimes the stuffiness is so annoying, having the fire department over to do just that has crossed my mind.
But thanks to everyone for your great feedback. I'm going to do it again a bit before going to sleep, and again in the morning.
Keep the feedback coming, please!

What Jeff said.
My sinuses are too labyrinthine for the Neti pot to do much good. The squeeze rinse bottle, with the added pressure it affords, is far more effective for me. I use it every morning.
I've had chronic sinus issues all of my life, but the daily rinse has made a world of difference for the better. _________________ Michael Rankins

I use al nasal (sinus) irrigation tip for a Waterpik I got from my ENT (who is listed by name in a footnote in the 1st edition of Alberger's book. I use the Waterpik on the lowest setting. I use Dr Tayor's formula for an isotonic saline solution in warm water. Works wonders for me. I've had sinus and allergy issues for years.
I use it twice a day. Three times when I feel cold like symptoms or we have very dry conditions.
A Neti pot did little for me. _________________ Gregory Best

I started with the pot, then moved to the bottle, and finally upgraded to the Waterpik SinuSense. However, I haven't been even marginally consistent with any of them for various reasons, one of which is a lingering question I have about the water that's used to make the mix. Is it *really* vital to use distilled water? I keep forgetting to buy the stuff, and because I don't have it, I'm not sure that it's "safe", so I hardly ever rinse. Would it be all right to use filtered tap water? _________________ Justin S. Barrett

Ah - so *that's* what happened! (I'm serious by the way - it was in there for a couple of weeks.)
Anyway, I only use it now when I feel the "tingle" or notice that I've been sneezing more than usual. Once or twice a day for a day or two only.
I do, however, gargle with Coca-Cola. That's not a joke and has absolutely no bearing on this conversation. That is all.

I think that'll be my next attempt, given that I consume vast amounts of soft drinks. Get some carbonated fluids into the esophagus, induce a hiccup, have fluids shoot up into the sinuses, and TADAA! Payday in the form of cleansed, yet sticky, nostrils. |

I'm not a doctor, but (etc. etc.)...I've learned a lot about such things over the years and so long as the tap water is clean and not ultra high in chlorine you should do just fine shooting it up your nose. Hey, a lot of us go swimming (and occasionally snorting) in much worse water and survive.

I agree Bruce. I've been using warm tap water with plain (non-iodized) salt, baking soda and glycerin since 1990. _________________ Gregory Best
