I'm building a second booth here. Or, more accurately, I'm trying to make my control room clean enough to voice in. I'm pretty happy with the acoustics so far; though that's a story for another thread (missing Mike Sommer big time).
The problem is that I've now tried two computer monitor screens. My original one had a hum and hiss only slightly less powerful than a fighter jet. My second attempt, an HP 19 inch LCD is much quieter but still emits a tone up around 15kHz.
Anyone stumbled on a brand that is completely silent?
Many thanks |

Sorry I don't have an answer for you (I bet George Whittam would know!), but if you find a solution, please post it here! Good luck. _________________ Best regards,

Thanks Eddie - only got room for a 19 inch though
Wonders if Acer do the same model but smaller - I'll check! |

I've never heard a peep from either of mine, and I've tried a few; LG's, Samsung's, Acer's, Phillips... my control room even has two monitors installed. _________________ Regards,

Same here. No noise from 3 AG Neovo 15's in the control room and a single 15" Viewsonic in the booth.
I remember CRT monitors making a little whining sound here and there...but never LCD's. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

As long as it has an LED backlight, it should be absolutely silent. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

When did that happen? There are several brands we don't use (HP seems to be the worst) in certain environment because of the additional noise they make. Usually the issue is with the power supply, sometimes its the backlight itself (though the noise generated when that happens is usually above the 20K range).
Apple and Dell aren't too bad, but Eizo makes a monitor that gets used in many acoustical forensic labs for that very reason. The tradeoff is cost, but they're also very accurate monitors (graphic artists love them around here).
Wacom makes a monitor interface that's also dead silent. Downside is that cost is about $2K.
Comes down to cost, but I'm going to be using some Dell Ultrasharps in my project studio soon. Seem to be the best bang for the buck as far as sound and quality vs. cost are concerned. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

The monitor itself is making noise?
Yipe.
Mine is silent, it's a LG— and I have the power lifted if that's any help at all. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I know that the old tube TVs would sometimes emit high frequency tones that only a few people could hear (I heard them occasionally back when I had the hearing of a mighty hunter), but I can't imagine a digital monitor doing that. It's gotta be a fluke.
I'd get him out of there before he stinks up the joint.

@Greg
When did LCD monitors start having LED backlights? Not sure, but not all have LED backlighting. I have a pair of cheap HP 1080p 24" LCD's with LED backlights I got on Woot and they are completely silent. Many older LCD's have fluorescent backlights which I find can cause acoustical and RFI noise. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Around 2005, IIRC. Sony introduced the technology to market via the Qualia line of TVs, but also with 2 monitors aimed at a speciality market (horribly expensive for the time).
Jeez... the dumb stuff we tend to remember. I first recall seeing LED backlighting being pushed widespread for computer monitors around the start 2008, but Apple introducing LED monitors in 2007.
Yeah George, there's a reason I included your clarification of LED in my original post. Fluorescent lamps definitely produce sound. LEDs aren't supposed to, but cheap ones can. A decent LED back panel doesn't produce sound. Used to be more of an issue in 2009, but not as much with some of the better brands out there now. Instead, it's the power supplies you need to watch for, as not all of those are silent.
First gen E-IPS were especially interesting creatures. Most were silent to human ears, but a couple brands had a tendency to produce noticeable sound in the 25 - 30k range, IIRC. Rarely heard by humans, but created all kinds of hell for folks in certain industries (why some companies don't do all their testing in chambers separate from their computer equipment I'll never understand). To this day I don't know what the specific cause was for that (or if one was ever found), but watching several hundreds of thousands of dollars of monitors be re-purposes because of it, and having to re-do a few million dollars of testing, sent a strong message to the guy in charge of integration testing where I was at the time.
I was very thankful to not be him at the time _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I've got an el-cheapo $100 Dell 19" flat panel in my booth and it's perfectly quiet. _________________ Bob Ransom
