Hi all

So here I am again, building yet another booth. I make this one number seven. In an uncharacteristic effort to try and learn from previous mistakes I thought I'd test and get feedback as I go.

So, where am I at? Soundproofing is good, or good enough at any rate. As for the acoustics, well, that's the point of this post. I've installed around 70% of the absorbtion that I was planning on and I thought I'd do a few tests before completing the job.

Obviously I want a sound that's tight and well controlled. Nicely balanced so that I don't suck out all the mid range and swamp my voice with bass. So this is where you come in. Have a listen to this soundfile if you will. How does it sound to your ears? Can you hear the room at all? Any artifacts? Anything?

If it sounds good the way it is, I may just live with it for a month or two and see what feedback I get from clients. Too much absorbtion can be worse than not enough.

Thanks for your time and input folks - 'preciate it!

Colin

Hi Eddie - long time no speak! Do you hear any "room" at all?

Eager to listen, but both Internet Explorer & Firefox are giving me a "can't find file" type message.

A bit. But it doesn't affect a recording.

MUCH better than most of the studios I hear, in fact one of the best I've heard. Clearly you MUST be a perfectionist if this is booth #7.

I think the acoustics sound excellent, and the noise floor is below -60db, excellent even for a commercial studio.

I wonder how it holds up with the mic 8-12" away with a louder read, that's the REAL test of a VO studio.

To my non-expert ears, you voice sounded good and certainly not coloured by the room. There was no boxiness or booming and the bits in between the voice were pretty much non-existent.

If I were you, I'd hold-off on any more investment (time, effort or money) with #7 and enjoy the fruits of your labour... maybe just some tweaking down the road when you've used it a while.

Cheers
Peter

Thanks for the kind words. My clumsy writing; I mean this is the 7th time I've built a booth since 1986!

I'll try the torture test you recommend too.

Dave P - use this link to listen.

Colin, I'm fairly a newbie but I am pretty picky and I thought it sounded great. I feel like I hear your whole voice, if that makes any sense - the full tone of it. No room distractions to my ear. FYI, I purposely listened on my laptop speakers and not headphones.

Unless George's test reveals some weakness I'd agree with Peter that your work here is done, at least for now! Smile

That, to my ears, is the sound of a very good sounding room and impressive at an 8" mic working distance.

Very very slight 50 hz hum apparent at a loud playback level, but who's gonna listen to the sound of silence at a loud volume anyway, right?

Can you share details on mic & pre?

Thanks again everyone for your kind comments. I'll try a distance read on Monday.
