YOU HAVE A COUNTERFEIT COPY OF WINDOWS!

...that's what my computer told me a coupla days ago.... I was floored.

I'd been using this same computer as my DAW, and before that as a family computer for the last two years.

Now, alla sudden, I'm counterfeit???!!!

Here's what I found out. Microsoft is blithely promoting it's anti-spamware product "Windows Defender". (It's a free download). Unbeknownst to most, the program also has a little spyware of its own built in.

Turns out, MS is getting more vigilant about software pirates, and "Defender" keeps a lookout for improperly installed, pirated, or otherwise invalid copies of Windows.

Sure enough, I'd had my 'puter serviced at a local shop many months ago, where they'd installed a version of XP Pro that was unauthorized. I took it back, and they made it right at no cost ('got a quieter fan installed too).

If you get this message, your computer -- and Windows -- will continue to run as normal, but none of the automatically downloaded security updates, or ANYTHING supplied as a Windows add-on from MS will not install.

Big Brother is back!

Gee-- I thought your post was called "Counterfetti".
