I tried VINDALOO at an Indian restaurant recently. Spicy without blistering! Made me sweat, opened my sinuses, and in the end made me sneeze the most gigantic full-bronc sneeze of a long time.
Wow.
And it was very tasty, too! Mmm— food that really is GOOD for you.
Thank you Philip! _________________ DBCooperVO.com

OK, now you've got a taste for the good stuff, next time ask for a Phall. Last time I was back in the UK I ordered one, and the waiter just looked at me and said, "seriously?" _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

All the spice and heat makes the flavours flood out of a well made Vindaloo. Heat just for the sake of it is rather pointless at best or simply macho BS. |

Oohhh, good to know. I love heat but only tasty heat. I make my own hot sauce and have adjusted it to be hot and flavorful! After this post, I guess I know what I'm going to try this week. Thanks! _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

OK, I'll admit it... the first time I had a Phall (back when I was a misguided youth) there was certainly an element of "macho BS" about it... but since then I've indulged occasionally when I've known the restaurant, and that they're not going to go stupid on me for the sake of it. You have to be in the mood and know what you're getting... on the other hand, I know people who consider a medium Madras inedible.
For those heading to the NY VO mixer in December, there's a curry house down on 6th St (Brick Lane Curry House) where they do a Phall that's described (by themselves) as "excruciating" ... you get a certificate if you can eat it. Now, this is definitely macho BS... I haven't tried it, nor do I intend to _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I've noticed "heat" is in the palate of the beholder, and certainly quite regional. I came from Arizona where the fire level of spicy ethnic dishes is apparently much higher.... plenty of restaurants that could blow your head off with chilies if you let them. Here in Oregon we order "4 star" or extra hot Thai food and it's one step above "tangy".

I had Chicken Vindaloo last night for dinner. Wonderful stuff! And definitely works like Sudafed. _________________ Bob Ransom

Maybe it's a myth Bish, but I heard people say that a Tindaloo is even hotter than Phal, though whether it's a legitimate dish or just an insane amount of chilli is another thing.
One thing is certainly true; the Vindaloo inspired this guy to write one of his biggest ever hits....

Not sure about a vindaloo... but I could sure do some damage to a chicken tikka masala with a keema naan and some onion bhajis. Boring, I know, but tasty!
... and I almost felt Rick-rolled with that video _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Gotta agree that the flavor of a dish can really be enhanced by the right level of heat. I always feel disappointed when they are too bland!
And that video brought a big grin to my face. One of my faves - just what I needed right now. _________________ jen@jengosnell.com

i cooked up a heap of hatch, new mexico chiles with onions last night for chicken wraps. did NOT know the chiles were SO hot, and we like hot. i added some sugar water to the mix and cooked them down a bit more, but that took much of the heat away _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be.
