when you see video of a still and the foreground is separated from the background and one or the other is moving? the foreground image is "popped out" 3-d-ish with a drop shadow? this is a stupit explanation ... but hopefully somebody will know what i'm blathering on about. i just want to learn how to do it.

I would tell the editor that I wanted to float some images over a background scene and have them pop out with something like maybe a drop shadow.

When working with editors I tried not to be too demanding - well, except I had some very specific ideas on the number of frames in a dissolve. They tend to perform better if you have an idea in your head and let them use the tools they have on hand.

But there were times back in the days of Smoke (or whatever it was called) where I wanted to do something that really couldn't be done very easily at the time and I racked up humongous editing bills as they tried to do what I wanted.

no - although i'd imagine you could do it in AE. MAN - when i'm NOT looking i see examples all the time - now, i got nuthin'.

I see this effect quite a lot in documentaries on the History Channel (and similar places), particularly when the only available source material is an old black & white photo and they want to give it just a bit of subtle animation. In the days before you could buy a 3-D TV, I seem to recall having hear this effect just called "3-D," but that connotation seems to have become somewhat obsolete.

I remember reading an article once on how it is done but can't remember what it is called. If we are talking about the same effect it involves multiple cameras...a dozen or more...shooting from various angles.

As it happens, I saw the effect last night on "How the States Got Their Shapes" on H2. They showed a vintage picture of a prospector while discussing gold mining in a part of Colorado that used to be part of Kansas.

I know the effect you mean - but I couldn't name it either. It's certainly accomplished ion After Effects though. A very effective technique.

Thanks for asking this question. I have a documentary in the planning stage and a lot of it will be photos. I knew that I would want to use this effect. I had researched it in the past I knew how to do it but forgot the name.

It comes under the film editing effect called RotoScoping.
