Hello everyone. I wanted to write and say hello. I am mostly noted for my music but I decided to make a demo reel as I have a passion for voice overs. Wanted to share, not sure where to turn as I am looking for some work in the field. Any suggestions? Please note, this is all 100% Improv I practiced nothing in this video I can do better this was just a test.
EXPLICIT CONTENT 18 + YEARS OLD PLEASE. THANK YOU

Welcome, Paul. Well done, you had a go! Three apologies for the content would ring alarm bells with anyone. You offered one here, one written one on the youtube page and in your intro. Whilst you did not actually say "sorry about this" the apologies were there.
Take down the video and prepare a demo; agonise over it as you would a musical performance. Make every second count, every joke funny, every moving moment profound, even a pause must be justified. Produce something for a paying audience. If you get it right, they'll buy.
Good luck. |

Was thinking the same as Scott. Paul has gotten a lot of input on this. |

Wow Paul! You received a full 5 pages of incredibly useful help and information, from seasoned voiceover pros including the great Bob Bergen (I take it you Googled him, to see how lucky you were to get his inoput on character voices) and you came here and copied/pasted the same post.
You'll find that a large number of people that tried to help you out on the other forum are here too Paul. By the way, when professionals that are in the industry that you aspire to break into offer their years of experience in order to give you advice, it's fairly rude to throw it back in their faces and start issuing bullsh1t challenges!
I can't add anything that hasn't already been said on the other forum, except that I turned off after 30 seconds. I'd had enough! Give each character enough time for the listener to get a good idea of what they're about and yet not too much to make them bored.
What I'm saying is that we got the measure of your old man in 9 seconds, the rest was superfluous. Bare that in mind for every character voice. 7 minutes is not only too long, but ridiculous!! Producers are incredible busy and I promise you, not one will listen to it in it's entirety. _________________ https://www.darrenaltman.com/

Thank you Dan-o. I hear rumors of "other forums" from time to time. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

I was taught that improve was not VO. I thought it was, but I was corrected very early in my VO experience.
If it walks like a duck... swims like a duck... quacks like a duck... and flies like a duck... it's a duck.
It will never be a swan. _________________ "Bailey"

Thanks for the nice note, Darren!
I also popped Paul an email that I tracked down from googling his website. I think his strategy is to keep asking until he gets the answers he wants. I'm happy to help out. But I can't force someone to take advice. Not that mine or anyone else's advice is right for everyone. But Paul now has enough info to get an idea of what he has, what he needs, and how to get to a place where he's competetive.
Oh-and DB, there is another forum! I found one that gave me a fab banana cream pie recipe for Thanksgiving!!! Xo |

It's nice to give someone a little encouragement, a pat on the back and help them feel good but we all need to draw a line some where.
My nightmare is receiving a note from the wife of an aspiring VO who blames losing their home on my "papering over the cracks".
To earn anything as a VO requires having about a dozen balls in the air at any one time or in my case an extraordinary degree of luck .... No, I am NOT being modest. |

I think it's a combination of balls and luck. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
