I'm in the market for new home which I'll probably purchase sometime early next year. I'm looking specifically for a home that will accommodate a VO studio.

I've looked at isolation booths like the Whisper Room setups in the past, but I've heard that they often make you sound "boxy". It's been a common sentiment by many audiophiles that they prefer an open space that's properly treated, rather than an enclosure. Having had no experience with them, I've no idea either way.

Optimally, I want to convert a room or even go so far as to build a space. While doing some research, I came across a company called Delta H Design that operates very near me in Culver City, CA. They tout something called "ZR Acoustics" and recently decided to offer small scale applications of it (14' x 10' x 9' being the minimum) by first quarter of 2012.

Here is a link to their website:

Any thoughts on this approach? Has anyone heard of this company or of ZR (Zero Reflection) Acoustics?

Edit: I also found this blog that features a video describing the process used at the Universal Mastering Studios project: http://patchbay.wordpress.com/2011/01/12/delta-h-design-and-zr-acoustics/

Benjamin:

Designing home voiceover recording studios is part of what I do for a living.
That company looks very appealing, but looks like they may not be versed in voiceover booth construction. They are building rooms for music and film production or reproduction, it seems. I am sure they are over qualified (and possibly over-priced) to create a VO studio, but I would be curious to see what sort of initial budget they are willing to work with.
Let us know what you find out if you decide to contact them.
My January schedule is free of any large projects as of this time after I return from NYC on Jan 6th, should you need to get started on this soon...
I am based in Santa Monica and consult with you via phone or in person.
All the best in 2012.

Thanks George,

It's good to hear from someone in the area. I'm very curious about this company, so I'll be sure to fill you in on any details I learn. That said, knowing you'll be available in January makes me inclined to look at what you could potentially offer. I like to plan things in advance, so perhaps we could talk offline so I can get an idea of what direction you might suggest I move in. That may influence my home purchase decision as well.

Ben, you can't go wrong with George. Great ears and a really knows VO needs.

BTW - George---I won one of the certificates at the mixer. Got me some "Whitham in the bank" I guess.
