Well, it's time to start the chatter about this. I went in 2010 and met many of you fine folks there. I really enjoyed it as someone somewhat new to VO. But now, looking back, I'm wondering what I'd gain from attending this time around.
It's ALWAYS fun to see friends. Disneyland is, well, ehhh.
So folks, I'd love to hear who's planning on attending this year, and what you hope to gain.
Oh, and since Liz won't be in a wheelchair, I doubt it will be nearly as fun for her this time around
cheers!

Were I looking for a few fun days away and the opportunity to spend time with friends (assuming they planned to attend) I'd be there.
Commercial value for a working Voiceoverist? Little or none. |

I doubt I'd go. It seems to me that the signal to noise ratio isn't likely to be favorable.
I had a look at the session list and saw about 5 or 6 that would be of interest to me. But the cost looks to overbalance the benefit.
Even with an early bird booking and assuming I shared a room 4 ways (doubtful), I couldn't see such a trip costing me a penny less than $2000. Yet, on the subjects that were of interest to me, I could probably get at least as high-quality and comprehensive advice right here in these pages, either in the archives or for the asking.
Of course, there's the social aspect and I would love to meet folks. But there are other, smaller-scale venues for that which I think I'd prefer anyway.
I honestly doubt the return on investment from this event alone would be significant for many attendees. Would love for someone to show me how it was otherwise for them from going to a past one. _________________ jen@jengosnell.com

Have yet to hear a good word from VOs who've spent more than a New York minute attached to the craft/business. |

Pound for pound the better investment is about an hour north of Disney. That's where I'll be. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

For me the spend would be around $4-5000 and for that reason I have to look at the commercial value, the measurable commercial value. Whilst there is "chance value" in the same way that travelling to New York saw me sitting next to a Disney Director on an 8 hour flight, "chance" should not make you spend any time or money.
"Philip Banks, who the hell are you to teach me?" you yell. When I am charging you or someone else is charging you to be taught by me you MUST ask that question. In seeking your answer you need to look beyond the PR spin .. Do NOT pay the "nice guy premium". It is true that it's possible to learn from anyone in life but you need only pay people who are able to deliver commercially valuable knowledge to your business.
"So Philip, how much extra did you earn as a result of applying what you are now teaching us?"
"Well, I think it's horses for courses and every case is individual to the er ...um .."
"You're right Philip. Now, how much exactly was that in your individual case?"
Don't be fobbed off. |

I was going to skip in 2012 but have decided to wiggle to Latin rhythms instead. Yes, I shall be conducting my entire life through the medium of contemporary dance ......
.........That was off topic wasn't it?
Sorry
.....really sorry....
..........I'll get my coat. |

Just say NO to the Google+. It may be a good concept, but I'm so totally fragmented by social media it's ridiculous... What with specific VO forums (there is only one!), Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and any other number of time-sinks, one has to draw a line somewhere!
As for Voice 2012... someone, who's opinion I value highly, told me the other day that Voice is full of people trying to market their services to people who think they need them. Thus the industry feeds on itself.
I have no doubt whatsoever that there is some useful information to be obtained from the conference... and I'm sure the social aspect is wonderful... meeting others in the community has a definite value (especially for a relative late-comer, such as myself). But, when looking at a simple cost/benefit analysis of two trips to CA... well, Faffcon wins hands-down... it was never a case of either/or... Faffcon was a definite, with Voice as a possible addition.
This is the first time I've started the year with a "proper" business plan that has budgets for marketing, conferences, training, hardware etc. If I blow the budget on Voice 2012, what about Faffcon #5... or #6 !!!
Counting the pennies (so I can afford to watch Philip dance in a Latinerist way)
