In this test, the Senn 416/Avalon combo is recorded first, followed by the exact phrase repeated with the new Apogee Mic/iphone combo

I realize it's only Soundcloud, but it's pretty damn close. Next thing you know, we'll be using a Jawbone and an iPhone in front of an SE Reflexion Filter....

Well, that's interesting!

I'd have to hear longer clips to make a real judgment but I'm guessing the Apogee/i-phone combo is the one that sounds a little brittle.

Would be interesting to hear longer clips as I'm not sure about fast A/B comps like this one; I have a feeling our ears get tricked a little.

Another good test would be to hear how they both stand up to heavy processing.

It took awhile to get from reel-to-reel to Beta and VHS, but the way technology is moving now, the "Recording Studio" in your pocket will be a reality.

Yeah, but I'm not convinced it will be worth a damn. It's hard to get a properly treated studio inside a messenger bag. Sure, you can get your 416 in there with your laptop or netbook, and a reasonably useful mini mic pre/interface that's not much bigger than a paperback. Some are even moving to the iPad and the Alessis io dock. But an m-audio or such still doesn't compare to an Avalon or a Grace.... and a closet still sounds like a closet. Even those that DO have road rigs, myself included, admit that they don't always like the sound of what they submit from the road, and some have even admitted to being appalled after the fact at what their client accepted from the road.

OK... picture this concept.

An electrical "force" field that can disrupt external sound waves, preventing them from being registered (recorded) inside a protected area. Let's call it an "invisible" SE Reflexion Filter. About the size of a shoebox, with a range of silence variable of 2 to 20 feet. The voiceoverist could stand in the middle of a gymnasium and record as if he/she were in a sound booth.

Can it happen? Look at the progression between the "boom box" and the iPod. My answer is yes,
Wink

I believe the prototype for that has already been invented http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1eUIK9CihA

I just ordered mine- due to be delivered at the end of the month.

I was looking for something just like this to audition with on the road...I'm still a big believer that a pro studio is the way to go for all projects. That's why I find a studio I can use in every town I visit.

I think the way technology is moving is awesome...however, we still need to take pride in the quality of audio we send. Don't think my Neumann, Lawson, Whisper Room, or iMac are going to be seeing eBay anytime soon... Wink

BUT...my iPad and MiC will work wonders for those quickie auditions that pop up when I'm traveling or on a set!

Leave it to Riley to find a clip of the cone of silence. Good one.

Just hope the iCone works a lil better....

I have to say they are awfully darn close with a casual listen through my laptop speakers. Given the price, I'm sure Apogee is going to sell a metric ton of them.

I can even see myself finding use for one in the not terribly distant future. It's pretty impressive!

I'm afraid that no matter how good the mic is, it stills comes down to the sound of the room. And a hotel pillow-fort just doesn't sound as good as a studio.

Pillow forts are much more fun when wearing an Indian headdress.

That's true! Well, unless you're an Indian princess.
