Has anyone had any good results with the Sennheiser MK4?

Just bought one for a client, installing it Tuesday. Let you know, but my preliminary test showed a lot of promise for a $300 mic. Wish it had a HPF switch, but other than that it's sweet.

It's my go-to mic. Love it. Needs an EQ tweak nudged up at 6kHz for most commercial/promo stuff - otherwise it's great. Doesn't have that Nuemann sheen to it, but it has the heftier mids like a good AT mic without the boxiness or muddy lows an AT usually has. Very tight lows to the MK4 Also, with the additional $99 mount (and it's a very good shockmount) it looks rather spiffy. I like it better for my voice than the TLM103 or the MKH 416 I used to own. Most of my demos are with my current MK4 to Focusrite ISA One combo.

I was hoping to hear from you, Lance. I thought you used one. I really appreciated your astute descrip of the AT mics. I've been fighting with my 4040 to EQ out of those "boxy-muddy's" but for me it's too much hassle. My SP C1 is nice for character work, but sometimes can be a little harsh when going for a very natural sounding read.
I'm at a point of choosing between a tlm103 and the MK4. I'm guessing that the Sennheiser may have the same "smoothness" but minus the top-end presence boost?

I agree with you on all of that. I used to have a 4040 a while back and it's muddy on the low and a bit essy too. If you have a C1, then go with the flatter Mk4 in stead of the 103.

Lance, thank you very much for a nice direct suggestion! I know you're speaking from your own "trials by fire." I think you may have just saved me a lot of headache and a few hundred bucks...

May I ask you to direct me to one of your 'low-key' conversational reads done with this mic? I'd also like to know how much of a bump you're giving the mic in the 6K realm...

Much thanks,
Mark

Here's a very low-key conversational read. No EQ, a smidge of compression. Wink

Thanks again, Lance! Funny and helpful. Special thanks to the medieval non-union workforce of the past for saying the things that the workers of today won't....

Is the lion's share of your latest reel done with the MK4?

Thanks. That's funny. Smile Yes, the lion's share is with the MK4 at least on the commercial and promo reels - on the commercial the "Deer in the bathroom" clip is with a U87 (not ai), for comparison.

I took a good listen to the areas on your reel that you spoke of. They sound real nice!
You've been a great 'go-to' for me on this, Lance. I truly appreciate the time you've taken to give me an assist...
