Ssorry to disagree with you Mark. According to Neumann themselves, the mic IS an back plate electret. This is stated in their literature, in their dealers comments.,in the schematic, and inside the microphone itself.

You know I respect you Mark, but you should have checked with Neumann before you made the comment.

Hi Frank,

Actually, since I know that mic pretty well that passage puzzled me and in fact, I did check with Neumann literature before posting. I did not find any mention of electret:

http://www.neumann.com/?lang=en&id=current_microphones&cid=km180_data

The recordinghacks.com does not say anything about it, either (and they usually are very accurate about info):

http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/Neumann/KM-184

I am really curios and would appreciate if you could direct me to the source of that information, as I always knew the KM184 is based on KM84 capsule, which is definitely not an electret (I serviced dozens of those) and I will gladly admit if I am wrong. Also, if you have its schematics could you share it with me, please.

Best, M

Interesting discussion. At any rate, to answer Frank's question, it was a black KM 184. I gave it back to the guy who loaned it to me with my thanks. I'm still using my trusty Cascade M20u. For a small company, they make damn good mics.

Well, through another source I found out I was wrong and right. The capsule is powered through an external source, thus making it not permanently biased, and thus not an electret.

I read things as I wanted them to be not as to what they were in application. I stand corrected.

Not a biggie! The interesting thing is that it looks almost like usually people associate electrets with "second rate". While probably true for early examples (i.e. with diaphragm-electret), lately there some really excellent back-electrets, including some finest capsules ever made from B&K and DPA. The AKG C1000 for example, while completely useless for many applications, has a very good electret capsule (this mic problems are circuit and acoustical arrangements, but that's already topic for completely different discussion).

As always, it is not about topology, but implementation.

Thank you for the deeper understanding. I know some electret mic can sound delicious. As you said "it's the implementation".

I learned a lot from this little exercise in humility.
