Corey
Thanks for the lecture (meant in the nicest way).
Having taught, being a CTM (Certified Toast Master) and also doing video production I know how difficult doing what you have done is.
I see so many things on You Tube with some neophyte expounding on what they think they know, it good to see content from a knowledgeable person like yourself.
Looking forward to other lectures. _________________ Esse quam videri "To be rather than to seem"

Good job! The information was presented in a realistic way with no sugar-coating. I look forward to the follow-ups. I'm probably going to forward this to someone I know who's asking me about getting into the business.
Just one (technical) comment though... you called yourself out on the eye-line thing, but I'd go one step further... I think you need to arrange your lighting to get the glare off the glasses. Even looking at the camera, your eyes were somewhat obscured which leads to an audience disconnect. I know taking them off probably isn't an option, but re-arrangement of the lights & monitors may help. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Cory... about 30 minutes ago, I was looking through YouTube for VO stuff that had been posted. I stumbled upon How I'm Starting My Voice Over Career.. After 4 minutes of um...uh...um...a...um... I had to bale out. But then I saw your thread (on the VO-B and decided to check it out. It was like a breath of fresh air. I think your approach was right on. Most people need to hear the truth about what they think they want to get into... whether they believe it or not.
I think I'll head over to Starbucks now. _________________ "Bailey"

Thank you very kindly one and all for the feedback, I agree totally that there were some issues with sight lines. In truth I was falling into my usual "look at the spot behind the mic where I'm pretending the listener is" routine. I will probaby just lose the glasses and make sure tolook at the camera more for future episodes. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

Good content for the "noob". I like where you are headed.
Consider making the next episode as a three camera shoot, looking down and then turning to where the camera will next be set up. Then move the camera to the specific location you looked toward and repeat the looking down then up and into the lens when you begin the next segment or thought.
A single static camera is nice for now, as you do not need to edit the file, but can become tedious for the viewer in long segments. Emulating the "3-camera-shoot" takes more time, but is good practice. You will need some editing software though.
Keep up the good work.

Yeah, what they all said. I wish I'd seen this prior to teaching my newbies v/o overview class last Saturday, to add to the materials I gave them, but it's going into the next one.
As an aside, being a former video producer for ten years, I had to chuckle when your script reset the white balance on the camera! _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Hah, Scott- good point. And I find it funny in some ways that some of my earliest forays into the world of VO involved conversations with you via email about my (terrible) attempts at a demo reel. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

CC... That was a crude, cheap sound box. I on the other hand would have made the box out of graham crackers and lined the inside with large marshmallows. That way, if my voice over dreams never came true, I could still get a few meals out of the box. _________________ "Bailey"

I think your graham cracker/marshmallow box would actually sound better. If your VO career craps out, just get some hershey bars and make s'mores! |
